All: Dealer tells me this is normal...nearly everytime I take off from a stopped/nearly stopped position, I feel a slight clunk in the drive train system. It happens about 1 second or so after starting up, (it's not the brakes releasing late). Dealer said he felt it on another new H2 as well. I guess I will have to see by driving another H2 sometime. The only other vehicle I have felt this on (only much worse) was my old 89 Plymouth Voyager which grew into 4 replacement transmissions is less than a year.

Any comments???....I just don't think it is normal.

I knew I had read something about this before.
http://elcova.com/groupee/forums?a=tpc&s=2826088551&f=5106011751&m=582604658 1

But I could not find the one mentioned in this other thread. Sorry.

If you encounter a driveline clunk on a HUMMER H2 upon accelerating in a
forward direction after backing up, first verify that the problem is not
driveline lash related and then replace the park brake cables. The new part
numbers are: left hand side, 15190243, and right hand side, 15190244

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If
the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining
steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition,
please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic
approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2004 model year. Please discard
Corporate Bulletin Number01-07-30-042A (Section 07 -
Transmission/Transaxle).

Some vehicles may exhibit a clunk noise that can be heard on a 2-3 upshift or
a 3-2 downshift.

During a 2-3 upshift, the 2-4 band is released and the 3-4 clutch is applied.
The timing of this shift can cause a momentary torque reversal of the output
shaft that results in a clunk noise. This same torque reversal can also occur on
a 3-2 downshift when the 3-4 clutch is released and the 2-4 band applied. This
condition may be worse on a 4-wheel drive vehicle due to the additional
tolerances in the transfer case.

This is a normal condition. No repairs should be attempted.

2004 and Prior Light Duty Truck Models

2003-2004 HUMMER H2

This bulletin is being revised to add model years. Please discard Corporate
Bulletin Number99-04-20-002A (Section 04 -- Driveline/Axle).

Important

The condition described in this bulletin should not be confused with
Driveline Stop Clunk, described in Corporate Bulletin Number964101R
(Chevrolet92-265-7A, GMC Truck91-4A-77, Oldsmobile47-71-20A,
GM of Canada93-4A-100) or Bump/Clunk Upon Acceleration, described in
Corporate Bulletin Number99-04-21-004A.

Some owners of light duty trucks equipped with automatic transmissions may
comment that the vehicle exhibits a clunk noise when shifting between Park and
Drive, Park and Reverse, or Drive and Reverse. Similarly, owners of vehicles
equipped with automatic or manual transmissions may comment that the vehicle
exhibits a clunk noise while driving when the accelerator is quickly depressed
and then released.

Whenever there are two or more gears interacting with one another, there must
be a certain amount of clearance between those gears in order for the gears to
operate properly. This clearance or freeplay (also known as lash) can translate
into a clunk noise whenever the gear is loaded and unloaded quickly, or whenever
the direction of rotation is reversed. The more gears you have in a system, the
more freeplay the total system will have.

The clunk noise that owners sometimes hear may be the result of a buildup of
freeplay (lash) between the components in the driveline.

For example, the potential for a driveline clunk would be greater in a
4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle than a 2-wheel drive vehicle. This is
because in addition to the freeplay from the rear axle gears, the universal
joints, and the transmission (common to both vehicles), the 4-wheel drive
transfer case gears (and their associated clearances) add additional freeplay to
the driveline.

In service, dealers are discouraged from attempting to repair driveline clunk
conditions for the following reasons:

Comments of driveline clunk are almost never the result of one individual
component with excessive lash, but rather the result of the added affect of
freeplay (or lash) present in all of the driveline components. Because all of
the components in the driveline have a certain amount of lash by design,
changing driveline components may not result in a satisfactory lash reduction.

While some owners may find the clunk noise objectionable, this will not
adversely affect durability or performance.
[/list]

Ric, it is normal but doesn't mean it's right. Many times the problem is some gear at the differential, not sure exactly what the deal is but I talked directly to the service tech at my dealer (local dealer will look into any problem and doesn't just say it's normal, forget about it) and he said that the GM trucks do the same thing and that it's a simple fix to add some type of adhesive grease to splines on the gear and it takes up the slack. He said that it won't stay there and might have to be added later again.

He did say that it is not a mechanical issue though.

I had no problems with mine until I read this thread. The darn thing clunks all the time when stopping. Crapola. It is the 3-2 downshift variety. Thanks alot guys. Back to the dealer I guess.

I had mine in 2 weeks ago and they did the reprogram on the 3-2 downshift. What a difference! Just wish I had done it sooner.

Mine is not the 3-2 downshift problem...only at take-off.

I have the same problem. I took it in and got the "Its Normal" reply. I told them that I knew it was the splip yoke on the tranny binding on the output shaft on the trasfer case. How do I know this? Because my 01 Silverado did the same thing. They still would not do anything. So I left all pissed and when I got home I removed the driveshaft and applied some grease to the splines. The clunk was gone! I called the dealer and thanked them for their great service! Well after about 3 months it came back. Not it kind of comes and goes. There is a TSB about the driveshaft being too short but it does not specifically mention a clunk. I am taking mine back whe I get time and telling them I do not want it back until its fixed.

On the 2-1 downshift clunk, I had that too and the above TSB fixes it.

Please let me know how you make out with this.

Hello everyone, I just got mine a month ago and heard the clunk sound too only after a week of driving. I saw this posting and thought that i might be able to add to it. The clunking sound only happens during take off after reversing out of my driveway. I called my sales rep and told me that it a common symptom. He had me talk to his service tech and told me the same thing. I had the same thing happening to my 2001 Silverado but I didn't think much of it until this posting. I've put 175,000 miles on my Silverado but now the transmission is starting to slip. I was told that I overload it. I use it for work. What do they expect!

I had my drive shaft lubed early on and seemed to remedy the clunk for a while, now it is back. They don't seem to want to do the grease thing again....and again...oand again, so they say it's normal. That's a lame answer from a lame dealer if you ask me!

GM is the one that needs to stand behind this problem. The dealer told me GM is aware of the problem and will contact me when a solution is found. The soulution will come 3 years or 36000 miles later as you know. It pisses me off more and more I drive it.

To GM this is like you having some wind noise from the mirrors. They know it's annoying but it's not hurting anything.

Vette, the Hummer mechanic here told me that the best they have found is some type of "adhesive grease". He said it does re-appear down the road but it's no big deal for them to simply reapply the grease. Mechanically there is nothing wrong and no damage will occur, it's just an annoyance, but they have no problem applying a quick fix if it is that annoying. Some dealers just aren't keen on customer service. It's stupid if you think about it. If they would agree to grease it for free, one would assume that the customer would bring it there and get other work done. They'll pay huge advertising bills, but miss the point on things like this.

As you guys have said, this same problem occurs on many GM trucks and SUVs and the H2 is certainly not the first it has shown up on.

I agree in that it is common problem on all the GM truck platforms. A new updated slip yoke fxed the problem in my Silverado. I have also heard from three people that had thefollowing TBS done: Document ID # 1252388

They claim this solves the problem. Makes sense if you use longer shaft if it lessens the angle of the slip yoke on the output shaft. It looks as though you should be able to use part number 15207223 longer driveshaft on the exsisting transfer case. I may buy one just to try it.

My gripe with this goes beyond wind noise. It is a big THUNK and not just a slight annoyance on my car. After making millions of vehicles on this GMT800 platform, you would think GM would solve this problem.

I have only good comments on my dealer but I complain about each little annoyance and problem with my vehicles each time I get the survey. They are trying to find out if you are satisfied with the dealer and I take it asa an advantage to complain about some manufct. problems more.
