k&n intake problems
i have a 05 sut, just put a k&n intake on.i bought the biggest one with 11 more horse power?.but it seems slower and sluggesh, when i hammer it to the floor it s got desent power. but driving around its not right.it was defintly better without it . i'm confused,i thought it would be way better all around. anybody using somthing else.or have the same issue.?

Re: k&n intake problems
Either be patient and let ECM adjust for it, or disconnect the negative side of the battery to force reset of ECM.
|
Re: k&n intake problems
Check the wiring on the MAF Sensor.
|
Re: k&n intake problems
okay i will check the sensor and take the negative off . it just seems that it went from a real tight crisp engine ,to sluggesh until you get it up a high revs.

Re: k&n intake problems
Sometimes these air intakes introduce turbulence into the MAF sensor, and/or the MAF sensor can not react properly etc.
To overcome these issues, a new MAF that is designed for this purpose is required. The cost of a new MAF sensor would make the price out of most peoples budget, so most manufacturers choose not to include them. In most cases, they are not needed. They also fail to inform you of the loss in throttle response, as a result of installing one of their intakes. Only one air intake company that I know of (Volant), actually goes the extra mile and offers their intake with an available MAF sensor that is made for their intakes. Two other companies off a MAF for cold air intakes - Jet & Granatelli. Installing a properly calibrated MAF should get you the throtte response back and offer an additional and minimal amount more of a top end increase than just the air intake alone. |
Re: k&n intake problems
thanx a for all the info , seing how i've only had the h2 for a week. i think i will take off the intake and go back to the oem intake. and see how much of a difference it actually makes.

Re: k&n intake problems
Also, you might want to clean you MAF with some rubbing alchohol. The oiled air cleaners can let some oil pass and get it dirty (oily) enough that it will not function properly.
|
Re: k&n intake problems
i've read on some posts on here that the non OEM filters can trash the MAF due to the oil in them.
Also, and I am no engine expert, but if you allow more air into the engine, dont you have to also allow more exhaust out of the engine? Isnt there something called backpressure and if you dont have intake and exhaust balanced it can screw up the performance of the engine? |
Re: k&n intake problems
i'll try cleening the sensor before i take it off.that was my next question. i'm thinking of putting on a magnaflow exaust.mikegr has a good question. anybody know if this intake will screw up anything on the motor(sensors, balance). i'm not much of an expert when it comes to new motors.

Re: k&n intake problems
IMHO you are better off with the factory air box and filter in the long run .
|
Re: k&n intake problems
Take the K&N off and put the stock system back on. You'll avoid the oil contamination of your MAF sensor and even more important you'll get better filtration. Don't buy into the hype, stock is best in this case.
Here's a link to testing done on the same replacement filters by manufacturer: http://home.stny.rr.com/jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm |
Re: k&n intake problems
I've had my Airaid system on for 40k, the throttle body is Clean! No oil, dirt or sand. Which is pretty good, considering how often I drive to the gulf to go surf fishing.

I know there is an overwhelming desire for car owners to customize and 'enhance' the performance of their rides, but I've always had a hard time believing that the aftermarket kits can have more engineering in them than OEM's with their army of high-paid engineers and main frame computers crunching the numbers. Granted, much of a vehicle's design is a compromise knowing that different people will be buying and driving the vehicle. But still, other than the cosmetic altering to taste that we all do with wheels, etc., it's got to be a pretty big deal with a proven track record for me to consider changing anything mechanical on my H2. Nowadays everything is tied together somehow inside the onboard computers and changing something can have unexpected (and costly) unplanned consequences. Just my .02. Carry on. :) |

Re: k&n intake problems
Building a motor for the Baja 500 and building a motor to survive beyond 100,000 miles are two completely different things.
The test don't lie but if you want to think you're doing your vehicle a favor using an inferior filter, be my guest. Use the K&N and you can say, MORE DIRT LESS POWER :giggling: |

Re: k&n intake problems
Well I could say I'm just about anything on the net and get away with it, but the fact is I'm an Engineer. Just look up a few of my post- nobody in their right mind would post boring technical crap otherwise.
I campaigned a car for three years at KCIR and have built both small and big block Chevy's along with working on a couple of Ford projects. About the only thing I can't stand more than snake oil health cure-alls is snake oil go-fast parts, that's all. |

You're challenging the credentials of others...where are your credentials? And where's the dyno chart showing prrof of your "MORE POWER"? Mechanic or not, the only proof is in a dyno chart. One other thing...just because some racer has a K&N sticker on his race truck doesn't mean he's using their product. Ever hear of sponsorships? As an example, in AMA Superbike racing, you can't swing a stick and not hit a bike without a K&N decal on it. Want to know what kind of filter the top guys run in AMA Superbike? Uh, none, they don't use filters. |

Asking someone if they are a mechanic is challenging their credentials in my book. Where did I say flowing more air cannot equate to more power? And yes, I am challenging you to back up your claims of more power. Surely, you don't expect everyone to just bow down and believe you just because you say it...and because you see a lot of decals on race vehicles. |

Not always true. You have to have the fuel also. more air, and not enough fuel is not more power....(Let me get my stick):giggling: :twak: :twak: |

Re: k&n intake problems
we all start ignorant on a subject untill the facts are made clear to us ,than all but the enlightened are in fact stupid and unable to learn or grasp the facts. if you belive an open element air filter that draws it's air from a heat soaked engine compartment is better than a system where you draw colder outside air in there is nothing more to say. I just hate to see folks being hoodwinked by bogus claims of more power and better fule milage .if you like it because it looks kool when you pop your hood and show your buddys that's kool with me .I was shocked in 1965 to see Smokey's 1965 chevell (NASCAR) with a sealed air induction that sucked air in from the vents at the base of the windshield .THAT SMOKEY KNEW HIS **** . you want to guess why he didn't run a system that got it's air from a hot engine compartment . ?:twak:

Re: k&n intake problems
Old man,I take that as a compliment .and yes I have heard of a heat sheld and have not seen one that will work as well as a fully sealed system . I have also heard of a dyno and a thermomiter and have tested (on my 2005 Chevy 2500 hd with a Dmax ) and no shield available worked as well as the stock air box from a 2006 that I retrofited to my 2005. It must be nice to be young and know everything .and by the way this 56 year old man can say with pride that not a day goes by that I cant learn something new . just for fun light a cig and put it iside of your choice of shields and see if you dont see smoke escape . and by the way Carol Shelby is an old man too ,mayby you know more than him too .

Re: k&n intake problems
Wow, you f'up the install, get crap in your motor from sucking in some dirt from the mangled tube and blame the filter? As I stated above, the Airaid factory replacement along with the MIT have been on my H2 for 40K. The tube & tb are very clean, no dirt or oil.
|
Re: k&n intake problems
K&N would be my 4thor5th choice in a pinch ,I would like to keep most of the dirt out of the engine as I will be travleing on dirt roads and trails a good bit . so paper or foam seams a better choice .

Exactly. Maybe he's just imagining that he's having intake problems with the K&N filter. If having a K&N filter doesn't void the warranty, then all he has to do is take it to the dealer and let them figure it out. Won't cost him a dime. |

Re: k&n intake problems
Volumetric efficiency is the prime consideration when you're talking about cylinder filling on a normally aspirated engine, so you're correct to a point that a higher flow filter can assist in a better VE. This is where the more flow = more power gets it's basis.
However, the gains claimed by K&N occur at rpm's well above the H2's operating range- so they don't really matter. It's akin to running a 4" fuel line from the tank to get more fuel to the motor; you're never going to operate it at that flow rate, so it's unnecessary. The downside to the K&N filter is that it will pass more dirt while not providing any usable performance gain on the H2 since you're not going to operate it in a flow range above the stock filter anyway. |
Re: k&n intake problems
I forgot to mention- Smokey Yunick was one of my heros growing up and I've got a few of his books. If you're interested at all in performance modifications, his writing style is "no holds barred" and doesn't mince words when it comes to all the performance BS on the market.
I latched on to his book, "How to hot rod the small block Chevy" when I was 15 and took it to heart. It was the single text that put my cars ahead of all the guys running Cherry Bombs, air shocks, and flipped upside down air cleaner covers :) |
Re: k&n intake problems
WOW,me too and I still have his book how to hot rod small block chevys and mine is autographed. same age 15 for me too .small world . that Smokey was a sly devel and was known to strech the rules .:iagree:

Re: k&n intake problems
i want to say thanx to every one for your input. i dident realize it would create such debate. but thats why i think this website is awesome.i,ve decided to take the k&n off, because at the end of the day my sut has more power ,better throttle responce and just runs way crisper. its weird i put a k&n intake on my 05 f150 supercrew & it was friken sweet. but anyway i have a brand new intake for sale if anyones interested.i think i will just leave it stock because i'm just happy to own the BEST F*!KEN VEHICLE ON THE PLANET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!
