Tire Chains
I'm looking to pick-up a set of tire chains before this winter. I'm running 37x12.50x17 BFG MT KM2s with a good bit of wear (I actually may get a set of BFG ATs before winter too). As far as chains go, I'm leaning toward the V-Bar chains found here: http://www.tirechain.com/37X12.50X17.htm
They won't likely get much use here in MD (unless we get another series of blizzards like last year), but I always like to be prepared. Any feedback anyone has on running chains, how they wear the tires, preference/benefits in types/styles, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
Re: Tire Chains
Forget the chains - get your tires siped. Trust me on this.

Re: Tire Chains
Would you say getting a set of Cooper STT siped would give you near BFG AT performance in winter driving but all the benefits of an MT with deep snow etc.
I am driving myself nuts right now deciding between 37 BFG AT or 37 Cooper STT because my truck is my daily driver as well. I am bored of BFG AT's however I dont want to shot myself in foot with winter driving on STTs |
Re: Tire Chains
I'm on my second set of Cooper STTs on my SUT.
37x12.5 on OEM wheels. Can't say enough good things about them. They don't bother the air suspension sensors, they're fairly quiet for an MT and they kick ass in the snow. I don't know what kind of snow you get, but I've had no problems AT ALL in 12"-18" snow....zero problems. |
Re: Tire Chains
We get everything from all ice to 12-18 inches in one snow, I used to live more in snow belt on east side of Cleveland but am more south now. My orginal bfg at have about half tread and I couldnt believe how bad they sucked this week when it snowed here. I have never had mt TC work so much. I was ticked off. I know the 37 bfg at have same tread depth so when I hit about half tread they'll prob suck ass too. I loved them when brand new.

Re: Tire Chains
I had the same experience with the BFG AT, nice tire...when there's plenty of tread. I didn't like them in the mud though, they didn't self-clean worth a crap.
I can't tell you the STT is great on ice...I haven't found any tire that it. |
Re: Tire Chains
Oh yeah I agree! I think with adding extra siping if you wanted, the stt would have to be one of the best tires for an H2
|
Re: Tire Chains
Agree also! Stay away from the chains.

Re: Tire Chains
Chains arrived today...they'll come in handy at some point. So, I'll just include them in my 'winter kit.'
Going to look into siping for general winter season driving. Thanks to everyone for their feedback/input on this. |
Re: Tire Chains
Question on Siping. I have Nitto Mud Grapplers. I've heard you shouldn't sipe those since the tread is chunky and the rubber is soft. Is this true? Anyone have their grapplers siped?
Heard chunks can break off. |
Re: Tire Chains
What do you mean sears brand? Like you mean they are made by sears and only sold in sears. I didn't know that, guess I might scratch those of my list. If cooper, mickey Thompson, and pro comp are owned by sears, then that is news to me and none of those for me!
|
Re: Tire Chains
No...not made by Sears. I just always equate them with Sears, since Sears pushes them like Craftsman and Kenmore. Every pair of Coopers I've seen (at least that I've noticed) have been badly worn and looked like they've worn badly.
I could be dead wrong on Coopers...but I'll still stick with BFG. |
Re: Tire Chains
Would you think toyo mts with extra siping would pretty good in winter driving? Better than coops? I need to buy tires asap as I nearly wrecked twice with my worn down stock at's. I am set on either bfg AT 37 or STT's but if there are any sugestions let me know. I did consider pro comp xtreme mt or at but I actually heard the pro comp AT isn't all that great in wet or winter driving.

Re: Tire Chains
I support Sears because they keep benefits and pay going when employees are called to battle. I think that is great.
I have no opinion on Cooper tires though. I would say stay away from chains unless going very slow through deep snow. Like if you live in Alaska or equivalent... Aside from tire damage, I had a friend who had chains on his pick up truck, and one broke and wadded the quarter panel up like it was made of tin foil. |
