Fix for the slipping shifter cable?

Hey all,
I just experienced my first slipping shifter cable yesterday.
Luckily it was at the lube place, so the mechanic was cool enough to get it "rigged" back up.

I am wondering if there is a better fix then replacing that stupid plastic grommet/ bushing that holds the end of the shifter cable in place?

I am wondering if there is a way to maybe thread the link, and then screw a nut onto the end of it (I am sure that is way better then plastic and way better then a push on). Or maybe there is a way to drill out the rod that holds the cable in place and put a smooth shaft bolt with a small threaded area at the end?

Just trying to think of better ways to fix this then to set it up for failure later on down the road.

If it wasnt for the internet and the mechanic, I would have spent a 300-400 on a tow and repair bill that I just dont have right now.

Any help is appreciated

I've been on the board a few years and on other forums too, and owned H2s since 2004 and this is the first I've heard of the shifter cable slipping.

looks like he is talking about the plastic bushing at the trans end of the cable breaking. Have heard of a few cases of this....but the cable doesn't just slip....it comes off. Emergency fix is using a pair of visegrips to hold cable to the trams lever.

Re: Fix for the slipping shifter cable?

I appreciate the answers, but I am looking for a permanent fix.
Something that is better then the plastic bushing that holds the cable to the link on the shifter arm.

Like I was thinking to take the shifter link/ arm the the bushing goes on and get it threaded so that instead of the bushing you could put a washer and screw.

Any comments?
