I'm thinking about joining the Navy and persuing my degrees in healthcare. Any Navy here with any thoughts or insight?

Well, I think you'd do better outside of the Navy unless you're desperate for the freebie of it (if years of your life are cheap to you) It is fullfilling. You'll rack up experience quickly. I do have a buddy who's brother became a brain surgeon in the Navy. A hospital bought out his contract, that's how valuable he is now. (he makes $5k a callout, a helo picks him up in his freakin' front yard)

If you end up haze gray and under way and don't like it, you'll feel like a prisoner. But again, you'll get to see and do things that few others do. It's a trade off. The free, fun filled life stateside when you're young has some amount of value.

In the military, you're always, and I mean ALWAYS subjected. I mean that in the worst way. There will be times when you want to get away and you can't, when you want to clobber the pious self righteous loser in charge of you and can't. You can't leave. You can't quit. You can't hit 'em. Just know what you're getting into. It's servitude and you're committed. You can't change your mind like a civilian can.

I have great memories, but boy howdy, there was a price to pay of dire hardships, long long long hours, crappy pay, idiots extraordinaire etc. etc.

Remember the good, toss the bad. I think college would've been a hell of a lot more fun!

Shop around. Air Force & Army have great medical programs as well. See what fits your need best

They're all good!

One thing, just leave the nursing field to women. Nothing worse than waking up in a hospital to find some dude wanting to change your bedpan or give you a sponge bath! You know what I mean....

And if anyone wants a second opinion on a prostate exam...never ever...smile and snap a glove on the opposing hand and say "ok, bend over!"

Yes there is. Go to Disneyworld during spring break. I'd take an involuntary sponge bath anyday.

If your between 16 and lets say 28, were not born with a silver spoon in your mouth, are not an ass hole, know the difference between right and wrong, are proud to be a U.S. citizen and have a sense of wanting to be a part of the solution , not the problem then joining the Military is a good idea...

In the military you will be humbled, stepped on, chit on, be led by (some) who belong in prison or reform school, be a second class citizen sometimes, lose some rights, not get paid well, eat crappy(depending on which service you join), and overall by the end of the first year you will wonder why you joined.

Now if you take the positives of the first paragraph, go in with an open mind, apply yourself, look at this as a LIFE LESSON, want to expand you horizon, see the world, learn diversity, learn life, learn or expand your desired occupation, experience good things that less then 1% of the worlds population will ever know, grow up then it is a good step...

To me... We are a nation at war. That being said there is no better time than the present to practice a Hippocratic oath. In that you will be challenged to the right thing by your patients and your conscience.

If you want to help pregnant ladies and elderly people stay in the civilian sector. If you want to help those who need true professionals and want and need nothing but the best, go military.

If you go military know that it is not about you... it is about those you can help. It is about what you give. And it is bout sacrifice. Unlike someone here being in the military means it is bigger than you. The rewards are high even if you have to find those rewards on your own. BUT you will never be forgotten by those you help and you will forever be rewarded by the families of those you touch. And whatever you do, dont steal shirts!
