Well guys, I just hit 1000 miles, going down the interstate when suddenly I noticed white smoke in my rear view ... Cracked transfer case ...

Sorry to hear that; let us know how it goes at the dealer.

Here is something reported on another H2 list. I don't know any details.

"they had a 2-week old H2 come in from
off-roading with a burned up transfer case. I asked if it was the mud hole the guy was playing in....nope...it was the 80 mph he drove home in 4-Hi lock."

I would hate for that to be true.

Bill, that wasn't you driving 80 in 4-Hi Lock, was it? Say it isn't so. Well, at least you are now nationally famous, they heard about you in Texas. Joking aside, sorry to hear about it, please let us know more details later.

I was just driving in full-time 4H down the interstate. I was doing about 85 (I wouldn't think it would matter - The powerplant and drivetrain are rated for 115 based on GM's Suburban stats). I only went offroading in some mud around 100 miles or so - nothing spectacular. I'll have to blame a simple defect.

Did you get the Hummer fixed? how long did it take? what's the story and why did the transfer case cracked? was the Hummer service good or any Hummer/GM follow up?

They said it would take up to two weeks to get the new transfer case. I'm driving my Jeep. They did, however, offer a nice loaner.

I'm frustrated, but I understand that something like a transfer case doesn't normally 'crack' and it makes sense to not keep extra transfer cases handy so I'm patient.

Bill:

Thanks for the update. I too had my H2 in the shop for 2 weeks as the front [technically center] differential and housing were replaced.

Really? I hope this isn't some kind of trend. That would not be good given the price we've paid for the vehicle.

What happened to yours to cause the replacement on your front differential?
