EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. -- A woman has been charged with abusing her 92-year-old grandmother by stealing money to buy a $60,000 Humvee, according to San Mateo County prosecutors.
Jacqueline Watts, 44, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two felony counts of elder abuse, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Investigators began looking into the case after the grandmother was brought by ambulance to Stanford University Hospital's emergency room for treatment of malnutrition and dehydration, Wagstaffe said. Family members had also called authorities with concerns about the woman's well-being.
Authorities said Watts took out a mortgage on the unidentified woman's home and used the money to buy the vehicle.
The San Mateo County Adult Protective Services department has taken over the woman's care. Watts' cousin, Jay Watts, said the grandmother is now "happy and well nourished" in a Belmont nursing home.
Watts was held Wednesday at the San Mateo County jail on $350,000 bail.
