Anyone switch to Synthetic? And did it improve gas milage? Think I'll do Mobile 1 Synthetic
5W30 after 30 days.

I run it in my H3, Aurora, Tahoe. I also change every 3000 miles. Oil is cheaper than a new engine. I don't have enough miles on my H3 yet but it does increase mileage with my Aurora and Tahoe.

I plan to switch to synthetic but not for a few thousand miles. I have been told the engine needs to break in on dino-oil before switching. I was thinking about switching at 5,000 miles but a friend just told me his dealer (Honda) told him not to switch until 12,000.
Any thoughts on when to switch?

It varies with different cars. I switched at 5,000 miles on my IS.

A good mileage is about 2,000, to switch. The engine parts are well set by then. Mobile 1 is the factory fill on a Corvette and has been since 1992, at least. 5W30 is recommended, and will get better gas mileage by the friction reduction which will occur in the engine.
In my first use of Mobile 1 in a Honda years ago, the changes to Mobile 1 resulted in a 400 RPM increase at idle. The car's idle had to have the idle adjustment screw backed off to return to the 750 RPM idle speed. That sold me on Mobile 1, and since switching years ago, I have never had an internal engine problem.
One other switch that will help the H3 engine, is to switch an E-0773 K&N Filter.

Corvette has used Mobil 1 for the entire run of C5 models 1997-2004, and still using it (in fact, they might have used it in earlier years, but my first Vette was a '97).
It should be safe to switch immediately, if you want to use synthetic oil. From all engineering reports I have read in the past four or five years, there is no increase noticeable increase in either mileage or engine life. That is as long as you use a very good grade of regular oil and it has the "Sunburst" symbol on the container.
As for the K&N oil filter...I agree, either that one of a Mobil 1 filter. Either will filter down to 10-12 microns.
