Hey Paragon,

That's funny even for you... LOL.

Seriously Matt, you'll probably have to order one from a speed shop (eg. Summit, etc) I highly doubt you'll be able to run down to your local AutoZone and pick one up.

Had the same problem on my past vehicles when I wanted to drop down.

Mark

You might mean the 180 degree performance stat. I wouldn't go lower than that. Stock is 195. http://www.mossh2.com/Shop/SearchResults.aspx?SearchTex...9-405&WebCatalogID=0

SOO, u think the 160 will or could cause trouble? if so what would it be, i just cant believe the 20 dgrees would make that much of a difference, any and all feedback is much appreciated, and it does get pretty hot in maryland in the summer, thanks

If I lived in Maryland, I would definitely go with the 180.

What all does your engine have on it and what are you trying to achieve by lowering the therm temp?

Just out of curiousity, will the stock cooling system even handle a 160 thermostat? I mean, it doesn't matter what degree your thermostat is if the entire system won't hold it.... it'll just make the thermostat stay open all the time.

Lingenfelter should be able to provide you with a 160 t-stat.
phone.260.724.2552

As others have asked, what is your reason for wanting the 160?

I can tell you that if you're trying to ward off a run hot issue the t-stat alone isn't going to solve your problem.

A larger radiator will help.

Personally I'd stay away from aluminum radiators. In my continuing efforts to solve my own heating problems I've discovered that aluminum radiators are not meant to be in a daily driver. They were/are built for racing applications and are expected to be treated as a disposable commodity being replaced every couple of races.

As for what trouble will a 160 cause? Probably none other than as Mark has stated it will remain open most of the time. In your winter months you may have to let the truck run in the driveway for a bit longer until it gets up to operating temp.

In the hotter states, a 160 deg t-stat is marginal as far as damaging o2 sensors and catalytic convertors. I'd say the 180 deg would be a better bet in your climate. If you're running straight pipe exhaust, go with the 160 deg definitely.

I run a 185F t-stat and it made absolutely no difference. The engine temp still gets up to 200-210F under normal conditions

That is because the cooling is marginally big enough for the heat load that is placed upon it. The BTUs that the radiator can reject just about equalls the heat load from the engine and transmission.

Going to a lower temp t-stat will only slow warmup time in cooler weather. This will cause the eng to run in an enriched mode just that much longer- until it get up to proper operating temp.

Contrary to popular belief only lowering the temp of the coolant by going to lower thermostat does NOT reject more heat from the engine. It only reduces the amount of heat that is transfered from the eng block to the coolant.

The only way you will effectivly get a lower operating temp is to reduce the heat load (like looping out the trans cooler) or go to a larger cooling system/radiator that can reject more heat.

I looped out my trans cooler in the rad. tank and went to a larger T-cooler in front of the radiator. Now my coolant temp hasn't gone above 195F. with a 195 t-stat on the hardest pulls. That is becaus I removed the heat that was being added to the coolant from the trans.
