Default OIL Question

I just did an oil change today, and when it was all done i came up 3/4 of a quart low when i was filling the bottles back up. I figured 1/4 was on the ground and still in there. So wheres the other 2/4 or at least 1/4.

Is it normal for 2/4 or 1/4 to either leak out or be burned?

I remember last time i changed it I got almost all of the 6 qts back, well a little less but not this much less. And then i put full 6 in it.

Should i tell dealer about this or is ok?

How many miles since your last oil change?
Some may be inside thr old oil filter and like you said some is on the ground

I would just keep an eye on your oil level to see if it is burning /leaking oil

The book says it take 6 quarts including the filter.

I would check the dipstick through the life of your oil, that should be your first indicator if you are burning oil. That and the smell it makes.

Was the dip stick up to the f line just before the oil change

I always check it first and at 6,000 miles it still at full ,I never measured oil after changing.

This weekend at 30,000 miles( using mobil 1)Im switching to mobil 1 extended with a ex mobile 1 filter and going for 10,000 miles.

I just got my onstar report today 29,990 miles ,oil 52% left next oil change 36,000 miles.

i didnt check the dipstick before changing it, usually dont, but from now on will. I dont measure it after changing either, but because i put the old oil back in the bottles of teh new one i noticed that i had 1 empty 1 qt bottle, so thats what got my attention. According to onstar I was at around 19% just before the oil change.

First, let's be honest, ALL internal combustion engines burn some oil. If they did not burn oil, the rings would be sliding up and down on dry cylinder walls. It should not be noticeable, on the dipstick, being that over about 6K miles it equates to about 1/16 of a quart.
Second, the oil filter contains more oil than you believe, even after you drain it. In TN, we had a hydraulic oil filter compressor that squeezed the oil filter down to about 1/2 inch in height, about 1/4 of a quart would be squeezed out from the filter media.
Third, there is some oil left in the engine that will not drain out. There are valleys and nooks where oil lays, as well as the bottom of the oil pan. How much, I'm not sure.
Fourth, when someone adds six quarts of oil to the engine, possibly a sixteenth was left in the oil containers. As you know, it appears these puppies will drip forever.
Desert Dan has the correct answer...watch your oil as you drive over a period of time.

Don't feel bad I am STILL undergoing oil consumption tests my 4th one now. After 1500 mi I was 2qts low, now they want me to go 2500 mi to see how low it gets. I have had the head replaced once, cam cover gasket replaced, and some resinator filter replaced. It doesn't leak oil it burns it. Now that tells me there is something wrong with the rings or something in the lower part of the engine but you can't tell them that, it wasn't there idea. I currently have 17,200 mi on it and will have owned it 2 yrs in Aug. Does anyone have a of contact number for GM so I can try to resolve this issue, it's getting kind of old.

I changed my oil today and I let the container sit in the funnel 30 seconds.
I then cut the face on the container off(to dbl side tape under the hood so regular oil is never added see pic).

Look how much oil was left in there.

F5 on the ball again

Hey Marin. This might be a stupid question, but when you initially changed your oil, and obviously you check your dipstick to see if the levels are good before you close everything up right? Now did you start the engine to circulate the oil through the filter and then check levels again? I was just thinking that if yoiu didn't do so then you might have seen it full before that and not seen the .25-.5 of a quart lossed into the filter upon start up, as F5 stated, if you didnt check it again after initial start up. Maye it ran 6,000 miles or whatever a .25 quart low and you didnt realize it till you changed it.
