TIE RODS
I just ordered an inner and outer tie rod, and they will be at the dealer tomorrow....
25781473 Inner Tie Rod 16mm
15907712 Outer Tie Rod 16mm
I have been told these will fit all H3s. 2007 vehicles produced after VIN 108975 have the 16mm tie rods from the factory. Those who have had a complete steering gear with inner and outer tie rods replaced, may have the 16mm size rods.
2007 vehicles produced before that VIN number and all 2006 vehicles use a 14mm inner and outer tie rod. I have been assured the larger 16mm rods will fit into the existing gear used on the 14mm rods.
So, for 2007 vehicles after the above VIN number, you only need to replace whichever one you bust (inner or outer). For those 2007 vehicles built before the VIN or 2006 vehicles, to replace one with a 16mm rod, the other on the same side also has to be replaced.
Now, have I completely confused everyone????

Re: TIE RODS
Is this 16mm standard applicable to the SA built 07 H3's as I am on the verge of purchasing one next week??

That would be of course if the SA built '07's follow the same VIN series as the US built ones. I dunno, you got any input. Just a thought
Anyhow, best thing to do is I'll take a vernier caliper along to the showroom and find out for sure

Re: TIE RODS
I'm still confused? Will these* 16mm parts fit my 2006 if I replace both inner and outer at the same time?
25781473 Inner Tie Rod 16mm*
15907712 Outer Tie Rod 16mm*
The 16mm must be the threaded section that adjusts the toe-in correct?
The tie rod ends that bolt to the steering knuckle and steering rack have remained the same?
Maybe the the way to go is replace 14mm parts with the 16mm tie rods at home in the driveway and keep the 14mm as spares?

Re: TIE RODS
I have been assured the inner 16mm rod will thread into the steering gear, and the outer will fit inside the knuckle with no problem.
The 16mm measurement is the diameter of the inner tie rod between the joint and the threaded portion that threads into the outer tie rod. Due to this larger size, the outer tie rod is large (approx. 22mm from my measurement).
The inner comes with the large and small clamps for the boot, and a new jam nut. The outer comes with the new spindle nut.
The part numbers for the tie rods are for either left or right, they are interchangeable.
Just remember, if you get 16 and you currently have 14, you have to change both on one side if either outer or inner breaks.

Anyone have the procedure for replacement out of service manual??? I could figure it out but the instructions would give me a head start.

Re: TIE RODS
What's up with all of the tie rod replacements F5? Are you all just burning them up on the trails or are they wearing prematurely under normal driving conditions?

1) This is a 7 month old thread and F5 is long gone (sort of).
2) He never actually says anything about swapping them out.
I believe he was just sharing the info that the larger 16mm TR ends will fit all H3's. And at the time of the original post, there was a shortage and they were hard to come by.
