Down the rocks. The trail was a lot longer than this, and we had come thru some pretty narrow washes to get to this part. Next item on the list is magnetic skins. The brush left a few momentos.

That sure is pretty scenery. How long were you there?

Last item on the list was deep water. We had driven about a half-mile before we thought to pick up the camera. I thought the desert was supposed to be dry! This road was great fun! Hope you enjoyed the pics. We were grateful to be in the Hummer, and not the Navigator. In fact, that's all we could say. "Good thing we didn't bring a different car!"

Nice pics. I expect to see all of them sometime soon... over beers. Have your crumb-snatchers kicked their colds yet?

BTW, that's a really nice winch.

Yes, they kicked the cold on the way there. Tippy cups full of milk, and movies the whole way would make anyone feel better.
The winch, on the other hand, is way Cool! I had someone help me lift it on this time, because the first time I did it, I went to bed with a sore back. I didn't have to use it, but I don't know what I would have attached it too if I had. Any ideas?

Dig a large hole in the sand, hook winch to spare and through it in. Pull yourself out. Best way is a Pull Pal. I have no affiliation of link. http://www.trailduty.com/products/index.html see it half way down page.

Have you used one with your H2 or something bigger? It doesn't look that sturdy. The picture shows a Jeep. Jeeps do not weigh as much as hummers.

They are rated just like winches are rated. Trail Duty looks to be only selling ones rated large enough for trucks like the H2. The stock numbers are related to their pull weight. I would go with the 14000lb but it does weigh 50lbs itself, considerably more than all the other models.

Plus is has a larger spade which is going to grab more ground.

There is a solution other than the one Vern offered if you have something nearby and don't have the luxury of a pull-pal. You can either cut a tree down, or take a solid log or something else that's substantial and bury it. Saves the damage to the spare, but you have to work with what you got sometimes and a spare tire might be the only thing.

You cut or chop it into manageable lengths and if big enough, only use one or, if not, stack them in a vertical hole and wrap the cable around all. Dig a thin trench down to close to midway of the pile and have the winch cable attach there.

LOL!! I thought it was a joke!! I've never heard of throwing a spare "tire" in a hole and winching to it!! But I'm from the old school where everything was chained up or dug out the old fashioned way. Thanks for the advise. Have you actually tried these things?

Picture from here:

http://www.mapsupport.com/thedatabas...l/winches.html
One hint on winching which may prove useful : if you find yourself stuck in soft sand and there are no trees or other solid objects close enough to anchor your winch, there is still a way out. Unwind your winch cable (and hook) as far out from the vehicle as it will reach. Then remove your spare wheel and roll it out to where the hook is. Attach the hook to the spare wheel and then bury the spare wheel, and the end of the cable, at least one metre (3 feet) deep in the sand. You can then start to winch in the cable. The spare wheel and last few metres of cable should be buried deep enough to stop it being pulled up out of the sand when the winch starts.

Well, my idea WAS from experience, so, yeah I've done it. I used it several times in high school.
