"Just because you don't own a Hummer doesn't mean you can't drive around looking like you do.

Urban Gorilla's 4x4 off-road body kits cost a fraction of the price and offer a full range of steel bodies that'll make your standard Chevy pickup truck look like 100 grand.

What you get is a complete body package with premium options available separately.

What you'll need is some autobody experience -- or access to some -- and about 100 hours.

What you end up with is a reasonable facsimile of a combat, soft top, wagon or hardtop military-style SUV.

Heck, it's not just for the less privileged. If you're a frugal rich fella who doesn't plan on driving straight up mountains or into combat situations, then this product makes sense.

Just don't tell anybody what you've got -- let them see it from afar and praise the heavens that ignorance can create bliss, and cost savings.

The kit goes for $7,068 and up. Visit http://www.4x4bodies.com for details."

The show on Sat. AM "Xtreme 4x4" is building one of those out of an old Suburban for a tow rig. Pretty slick looking, but the Banks twin turbo Duramax is the star of the project.

There also used to be a company in Utah that built the BUMMER, until AM General shut that down.

I noticed they didn't try to duplicate the grill and headlight placement. Guess they were afraid of getting sued.

I have to say this has been the show's best build so far. It's been pretty cool to follow.

I don't get it. $10K for a wagon. Why not just put that money towards a down on a used H1.

I would have to agree that I would definitely get the real thing rather than one of these. What you have to consider it that for $15k-$20K someone who can't afford the real thing can have a wannabe. If you took that same money and put it down on a new real H1 you have a hell of a lot left to pay off. If you put that money toward a cheap used on, you could end up with a lot of expensive repair bills.

Brings to mind the "classic car" kits that bolted onto VWs. No one was fooled except the people who bought 'em.

My local dealer had a used H1 wagon on the lot for $40K when I bought my H3. Take that $15K-$20K you're talking about and you're about halfway there. And it's not like people are throwing these on a *new* chassis. It's probably still a 10-20 year old truck they're starting with. And then your still not getting the capabilities of the hummer.

To each their own, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

I agree, not my thing either. I personally would go for the $40k used one first but even using an older truck, the kit would be cheaper to work on for someone interested in one. Someone getting one of these probably wouldn't care about it's capabilities either, because they are getting one to make everyone think they have an H1, not actually wheel it.
