I want a radar detector mounted in front grill connected to Onstar speaker - how??
Has anyone wired their radar detector into the OnStar or other stock speaker and mounted it in the front grill or engine area so it is not so visible when being pulled over???
In the last week, I have gone to court twice to fight two speeding tickets. One happended 2 years ago with my Trailblazer and the other with my H2 about a year ago. I won one, but lost the other. Its pritty funny how I won - lets just say I tried even little dirty trick I could think (and read) about - one worked, though the judge did say "relucantly I have to ..."
Anyway, its a fact, I speed! I would lose all my hair if I travelled the speed limit. On average I travel 10-20kms faster, and on highways 20-30kms faster. I don't want to chance it again, so I'm now in the market for a radar detector (its been 15+ years since I've had one - since my teens)
I don't want one mounted on the windshield. If the cops see it, its over (no chance for a warning and your odds of winning in court are much less). I want to mount it in the front behind the grill, and connect it to the Onstar speaker - at least the Onstar speaker will get some value. Has anyone done that before?
On hey, I also have an invention idea, and I want your advice. I'll share it, though no one better steal it from me and patent it. A rear-view mirror with a built in radar detector, with a digital display built into the mirror. It would be very similar to the rear-view mirror in the H2 with the little digital display, but it would have a built in radar detector. What do you think?? It would fool the cops if you got pulled over, yet offer the best protectiojn possible and be easy to install and hook-up
Thanks

www.k40.com
Radar in the grille will only give you very very little coverage. Try something like K40.

Nice idea but don't you think the Police could see the Digital Display going crazy through your rear window?

I used to have one of these, but sold it with the truck. Look araound for more up to date ones.. I used to like seeing the Cocoa Beach Police give me a look as I sped by them. They knew I was going faster than I should but couldn't see it on the radar.
It doesn't work as well if you round the curve and the LE pings ya at close range I think it was less than 150 feet. And of course nothing can out do the Vascar that our Highway patrol uses in FL.
There is alot to look at if you google...

Be glad you guys don't drive in Kansas- they just began a new program that outfitted regular commerical over the road trucks (Yellow Freight is the first participating) with 5 hidden cameras, hidden radar and an officer riding along. Then they radio ahead to a waiting patrolman to pull you over.
It's a tactic that almost no amount of radar detecting or jamming equipment will work against since they're spot monitoring you in the same lane at roughly matching speed with instant-on equipment.
The program is expected to net several hundred thousand dollars in fines over the NEXT SIX WEEKS! Here's the link:

Well IMO, the valentine 1 is the best radar detector available.
http://www.valentine1.com
While you do have to mount this on your windshield, it DOES do front, rear, side to side detection... AND it has arrows on it to tell you what direction the cops are coming from. It does X, K, KA, and Laser with POP detection.
Also, sorry to kill your idea about the rear view mirror, but someone already beat you to it.
http://www.ecisbmw.com/product_files...%20Display.htm
Pretty neato deal... there are some companies out there that will actually take your mirror and do this upgrade.... I personally think it is a little pricey for what it is, so I just go with the regular unit on the windshield...
BTW, I went from a Uniden detector to the V1 about 4 years ago. At that point I was 1 ticket away from losing my drivers license do to all my excessive speeding tickets. Since the V1 purchase I have had only 1 speeding ticket, the V1 was beeping like crazy, and I just was ignoring it... thinking that it was a false alarm since I was out on a country road and nothing was around... Well the Fing cop was out in a farmers pasture hiding behind big rolls of HAY! UGH!!?!
Hope this helps.

$3200 pays for a lot of lawyers fees to get tickets dismissed. My lawyer here in Dallas charges $95 a ticket....
I know, I just paid him last week....84 in a 60....
The smart azz asked me how I got such a moose of a truck going so fast... I answered "I was drafting the Hybrid in front of me"... He laughed, I still got the ticket.... Oh well...

Re: I want a radar detector mounted in front grill connected to Onstar speaker - how?
I was just reminiscing about my childhood and remembered I had made the coolest radar detector in history for one of my cars.
It was a standard whistler radar detector, I opened it up and extended all the leds, buttons, volume switch and speaker about 6 feet. Mounted the new encased radar detector right behind the grille and ran the wiring harness to the stereo. I mounted all the leds, buttons and switches on the bottom of the stereo faceplate and included a kill switch to shut off all the leds and sound if I got pulled over. It's range was limited but that was cool... I'll have to try to find the pictures of that.

Two words: Valentine 1. Mines saved my butt so many times that I'm losing count. No radar/laser detector's going to save you from a trap if you're running solo because it's all quiet until they pull the trigger. In Oregon for example, they're more diligent with the instant on, they're tricky. In California, that's rarely the case, they just leave the sucker on full blast and it's pretty easy to see them. Some city cops have come close to gettting me but I saw the scatter from them shooting the people in front of or behind me.
Since we got the V1, no tickets.

Re: I want a radar detector mounted in front grill connected to Onstar speaker - how??
Here in HI they have started mandatory jail time for speeds in excess of 30 mph over the posted limit or over 80 on the highway. I don't bother with a detector because instant-on will get you every time. If I am rolling by myself then 10mph over the posted is max. They don't bother with you for that. If I am travelling in a group of speeders I am never the pace setter. It has worked for the last two years. The only ticket I got in the beast was for "GETTING AHEAD OF TRAFFIC" I got in the far right lane that ended just up the street. Jumped the light and safely got over but the cop said I only did what I did to get ahead of the traffic. I couldn't argue cause that is what I was doing. Paid the 86 dollar ticket and still use that lane for the same reason today.

Huck - Yea I'm noticing the same thing and have the same results using a Escort Passport 8500 in California. But the reported increased use of laser does concern me.

Re: I want a radar detector mounted in front grill connected to Onstar speaker - how??
I've never been hit with laser. One good thing to do (and I'm doing it real soon) is get that spray that disperses the laser instead of reflects it back. That license plate is the target!
As far as instant ons... if you're not running alone, a radar detector will most certainly save your bacon (or checkbook as the case may be) They're zappin' people ahead of you too and it shows up, I've seen it over and over again. If you're runnin' alone, you're SOL.
Speeding with NO radar detector is silly. Might as well paint a target on your trunk that says "Cops suck!" and park in front of a donut shop. One REALLY dumb thing to do though is drive around with it up there and not turned on. My buddy got a ticket once with his silent detector up there, the cop cut him zero slack.
I have a scanner that I need to put back in one of the cars too that alerts when they're using their shoulder mics. On speed traps, a lot of the time the guy's outside the car to get a better shot of you with the radar gun and calls ahead on the shoulder mic. It WORKS.

I have to disagree on this one. I have only ever gotten one speeding and I have been speeding my whole life and it is usually 20-30 over easily (until HI cause I ain't going to be Butch's bitch for the night). The one ticket I got was for doing 115 in a 65 while racing a vette that cost me a whole lot of money but didn't slow me down. I have lived in Cali, DC, NC, and driven cross country about 25 times. I usually just us a CB and listen in to the truckers other than that I don't use one and continue to speed, tailgate and just generally be a nuisance to others.

That comment confuses me. I run around with the H2 with NO front licence plate, and I still got a ticket last year with a radar. Obviously the radar does not need the plate to deflect - it must be able to deflect from the body. Yes, I could get a ticket here in BC for having no front plate, but been doin it for 2 years now, and only have gotten two warnings. And both warnings were during seat belt checks or road blocks - I've never actually been pulled over for it. I've driven many cars in the past with no front plate - it looks cooler, especially on nice performance vehicles. I did it with my vette, mustang cobra, iroc, etc, and never a ticket yet.
So don't waste your money on this spary for the front plate. They don't need from plate to still tag you on the radar.

Haven't used a front plate on my cars/trucks for 25 years in California.
