Throw them away.
Seriously, I'm surprised they're not covered.

Mine is also rusting away as well.
I didn't bother asking the dealer to replace them yet...
I have an extended warranty and wonder if that makes any differences..

They should be. I know of others who have had the dealer refinish them...

Only covered for 1 year when dealing with paint or corrosion issues. I had 1 U step that was rusting after 13 months. Service manager took one off one of the used H2's on the lot and put it on mine.

If they are factory installed, or dealer installed GM Accessories at the time of purchase, they are covered by your 3yr-36K warranty. The only reason they have for not honoring this warranty is if there is visible damage. Call your customer assistance number in your owners manual and complain.

I have been collecting the part numbers for the new steps that are available on some 06s (and used on the H2 Red Cross Vehicle). They bolt above the rock slider which will eliminate removing the steps for most off roading situations.....let me know, and I will share what I have...

Yea, I thought it was a "one off" for the Red Cross H2 Hummer until I spotted the PBH2 at my dealer. I inquired at the Parts department, and he came out to see what I was talking about.
The computer had most the part numbers and he printed the list out for me, however, I am to come back after January to hopefully get the part numbers that were missing. The install looks pretty straight forward. The steps don't stick out all that far from the body, and you will need to replace the black strip above the rock rail with the cut outs for the steps.
I can hardly wait!

Service VME - Tubular Side Steps Exhibit Corrosion - keywords appearance assist bracket BVE chip delamination paint rust #PIT3650 - (Jul 7, 2005)
Service VME - Tubular Side Steps Exhibit Corrosion
2003-2005 Hummer H2
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
SERVICE VME
Customers vehicles equipped with tubular side steps (RPO BVE) may exhibit corrosion in the area where the mounting brackets are welded to the tube. This message is to inform you that a field service fix is currently under development. It is recommended that you avoid replacing any tubular side steps for this condition, as a more durable solution will soon be made available. As always, good judgment should be used when addressing any customer's concern. I will advise you with another message immediately upon availability of the field service fix.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
