Firestone service centers. A little over $100 for a lifetime alignment. $129 when I got mine from Firestone, but stopped been any use when I got 37's. I understand some Firestone centers can do 37's, and I'm pretty sure other tire stores offer similar lifetime alignments. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I pd like $110 for mine. Used it 4 or 5 times so far...there's only one firestone across town...but definately handy...

I've been crawling around under my truck (trying to keep my hands out of any unsuspecting slots) and I am really thinking that Cognito is on to something.

In that picture of CP on Metal Masher where the front tires are trying to meet up with each other in front of the truck, there is obviously something giving. We know it can't be just because the front end was drooping some because we do it all of the time without that kind of toe-in. So, assuming it was the centerlink because the centerlink is a tube of springy steel, it would have been bent upwards and toward the rear of the vehicle. This also creates rotation in the centerlink. The Cognitos braces against this rotation. While it preserves the pitman and idler arms, I am betting that it also reduces the amount of flexion experienced by the centerlink in situations such as the pictures shows.

I am thinking that the Fabtech tie-rods along with the Cognito kit is the best option for stabilizing the steering on our trucks and will reduce the chances of breaking.

Secondly and this is much more far-fetched a thought, I am wondering if this could possibly contribute to the failure of the CVs. A lot of stress is created on driveline equipment when the CVs cause the driveline to represent a U-shape (which would be the case if both front tires are pointing inward). If power is transferred to both tires and the tires are trying to point at each other, it seems that this creates a lot of bind on the front driveline.

Alec- was that on Hell's prior to Escalator?

(**fingerscrossedpleasesayIdidn'tdoit** http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

Those tires will not move on any rock. I believe that was the problem in Tellico when I pinned it slightly up on a bolder around a tight turn prior to a ledge (resulting in the bent knuckle/tie-rod end) and the slickrock in Moab. Not only do the knobs stick to wherever they are originally placed but they are wider than the body of the truck. So if I am squeezing through and obstacle they will toe in and but the body stays stationary, i.e.- that pic from Metal Masher.

Could we have aired down too much? Are the tires too knobby? Are they too wide? Any thoughts?

Ken and I have talked about trying some Super Swampers.

Don't forget that there is more suspension travel on a lifted H2, so you will get more extremes. Also, those big tires grip incredibly well, and will by themselves toe in/out just beacuse they are gripping and pulling so well.

While it preserves the pitman and idler arms, I am betting that it also reduces the amount of flexion experienced by the centerlink in situations such as the pictures shows. May well do, I hadn't given it much thought, but will get back around to installing my one, once I get a Rancho steering stab, and see if it helps.

This was without even locking the front, but the wheels are spinning and you can clearly see what happens as the suspension bounces and the center link flexes, causing the tires to deflect and pull in/out. That is a good way to break a tie rod.

http://www.*******club.com/events/060422/images/027.jpg </div></BLOCKQUOTE>It just looks to me like your front tires are trying to get up the hill faster than the rest of the truck. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Phil, does there happen to be video of you doing the same thing the picture shows?

Here we go with coincidences again. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Phil, your pic was before you blew the CV, correct? I wonder if there is any weight to my far-fetched idea of both tires toeing in stressing the CVs?

It's admittedly far-fetched. Especially since neither of you were locked up front and it's going through a diff anyway but ......

When you engage the rear lockers the whole truck shudders and IMO it’s also related to the rubber contact too. Too much traction when the locker is not needed, that's how you'll break stuff. With all the traction you have at Moab with those tires you rarely need to use the rear locker. In fact you can run many of the trails in 4Hi Open and only switch to 4Lo for the tougher obstacles.

FWIW I never use a rear locker when turning (apart from in bad mud), doesn't do the vehicle any good. Same goes for the front, it is usually only on for a few seconds, then straight off again. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>I am always on/off with the rear locker. I try to never have it on if the truck is turning unless it's just absolutely necessary.

This is just an opinion and this should in no way be taken as inflammatory, but bottom line is that this is not a reliable setup and I don’t see you having much fun with it. It does look cool as hell though.

You guys are for the most part running the same trails as us stockers and other than a few optional obstacles (that I never saw you try) there is not much you can do that a stock H2 with 37s can’t.

Given how far you drive and your need to have a decent chance of getting home you need to (a) get a trailer or (b) take the lift off and go to stock rims, HD tie-rods and 37s.

We did everything on the trails we ran except Hell's gate because of fear of gripping like Phil's did at the beginning decent and the hot tub because that had been done last trip. Everything else was taken in stride and harder lines were taken out of boredom. We could have wheeled more but- yes, the long trip home is more important than pushing it and Ken becomes understandably cautious after something goes wrong.

The lift gives you an advantage- in articulation and clearance. The tires though grippy are good, but I am considering a smaller tread.

I am happy with all except the extra play which makes it toe and possibly makes it more prone to half shaft and/or CV breakage. I am sure to find out the issue and resolve it.

Big = more fun. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

If you are going to mod your truck for wheeling, you might as well do what you can to it. Phil, Ken and a few others that have them lifted and wheel them are pretty much pioneering in this area so things will need to be worked out until perfection is reached. There will always be damage- even to the biggest fabricated rock crawling buggy. Everyone pays a price for wheeling their truck and pays more for how much and how hard.

I like Paragons idea of all of us going in together and buying an H2 for spare parts. We can bring it to Moab and then as we need things we have it. Then if you needed a part off the H2 then you have to have it replaced with the same part. Or we could all travel like the NASCAR teams. We just all need to bring a back-up Hummer. We know, Tim is already on that program. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Besides which there are only so many tie rods, half shafts and t-cases on a H2 http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>No NO NO. The concept is we all pitch in and buy some community owned salvaged H2. We'll drag it around in a purpose built trailer that will include tools, air compressors, generators, porta-cool, lots of beer, etc. When a breakage occurs then that community member pays the retail price to replace that part and it goes back into the parts bin. Of course, we have multiple versions on hand of some items we know we might need. eventualy we might end up with a new truck with a 5 year old brake pedal.

I still laugh at something you did near the end of the Gold Bar Rim trail. After 15 hours on the trail and it being like 10pm.... you were asking me about what you should to get it fixed. "Should I call roadside assistance". I laugh because after 15+ hours of winching, towing, etc. all I could think about was getting the rigs off the trails, yet you're asking about roadside assistance! The rear brake caliper bracket is what would hold it in, since the rotor is on the end of the axle shaft. If that were to break however...

NEO,

I still laugh at something you did near the end of the Gold Bar Rim trail. After 15 hours on the trail and it being like 10pm.... you were asking me about what you should to get it fixed. "Should I call roadside assistance". I laugh because after 15+ hours of winching, towing, etc. all I could think about was getting the rigs off the trails, yet you're asking about roadside assistance! Too funny!!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Cool video, but the guy is freaking hyperventalating!!! Why didn't he get the other guy with him to spot him when he turned around? What a dork. He should have followed someone up there who had been before. He was in a jeep for crying out loud. I did a three point turn the first time I went up and I was in my H1!

Make sure you watch/listen to the entire clip - he really loses it going back down. Best line was "Here's my $10, I want to die". He even starts talking to GOD. I was talking to my brakes the entire way back down.

I have been to alot of places but I had no rear locker...don't know if I neededed it (advice anyone)...and I listened to someone who said it would be tough in a 5 speed. I no longer believe it. The locker may have been an issue along with the street tires...but I think I should have and could have gone for it. (also remembering the wife in my head saying.."please don't do it". Never should have shown her that bronco video.)

Question: I saw that some brought along gas tanks, was extra gas needed on the trails by all the vehicles or were you all able to fill up each day somewhere off trails?

Fubar

There are several gas stations in Moab so filling up each morning is not a problem. White Rim being 90 miles long and by the book requiring 2 days to complete you might want some extra gas along but for many of the trails in Moab the need for extra gas cans is not a necessity.

No bother. You're not in it.Wouldn't surprise me. I very rarely get included. Hummer owners get jealous that I am a better driver then they are so they leave me off to save face. :p:cool:

CslRkH2 on the same ledge.

Note Ken in the background. Everytime someone cleared the ledge he'd break into a Karate Kid stance. We don't really know why.
