Need some diff help!!
1 Attachment(s)
I talk to jarek m a ton, but I am still having diffcult time getting the inner shaft out, i think I might have broken something cause that thing won't come out. I really dont want to bother Jarek anymore so thats why i am coming to you guys. I have been hitting the hell out of it, but not really applying upward pressure since i dont know how would accomplish it.:twak : There has to be somthign holding it in there maybe a clip or something. I have attached a picture of what i am talking about the cicrcle is what I am having problems with. Is the half shaft(black piece) two different pieces which one is suppose to come out or does all of of come out.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Trya prybar with outward pressure on the shaft and hit it straight in towards the diff with a big hammer. If it dont come out you will need to split the case and ry to pop the clip off he end of the shaft.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Hitting it straight back into the diff sometimes will center the retainer and allow it to pop out
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
How do I split the case? I am new to this but love learning new things when I can. Still kinda confused on the prybar thing where do i put teh pry bar to aplly the upward pressure plus be able to hit the shaft or am I suppose to hit the prybar I swear I am getting stupid by the minute.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Pry between the mount and the axle flange.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
ok gotcha! I really think its stuck in there, but I will try again tomorrow. does it need to be unbolted from the diff. before I hit
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Nope, it has a retaining ring that seats in a groove on the end. If that ring expands makes it very difficult to get out
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Well i tried again today I think I am going to break something, I really need to see a breakdown instruction or something that hitting the shaft with a 8lbs hammer is kinda scaring me cause I really think I am going to break something. I am probably going to get a slide hammer so it even, I have heard you have to buy new rings, man this doesn't make since I would think there would be a inspection hole to where we can gain acesss to the pin in the spider or retaining clip.:twak: :raar:
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
At the end of the shaft there is a spring that prevents the shaft from sliding out, you need to apply outward pressure on the shaft to get the spring inside the diff to align and then give it a hit with a 2.5er. Some springs don't come out in one piece there for hawing a new set handy is nice, my came right out, looks like yours are a little more stubborn that's all
This is a different application but the end of the spline looks same #1. ![]() |

Re: Need some diff help!!
YOU ARE THE MAN JAREK I WAS REALLY TRYING NOT TO BOTHER YOU!!!!! THANKS SO MUCH, its just that these things are so expensive to replace if I break it and I really don't want to go to the stealership and have them do it, cause I could use that money for aftermarket parts you know what I mean. This iste is one of the best around, I have to work until tomorrow afternoon(32hr work day) so i will try again tomorrow after work :beerchug:

TWR: Did you pull that image from the EPC? If so, what version do you have? You can find out by clicking Help then About...my build date is 23Jul2007 11:05 124 |

hi guruerror, it came from Alldata. Its for a 2008 but the diffs are the same but the gear ratio is 410 to 1 in 2007 and down trucks and my 2008 is 373 to 1 do you need a picture of something? |
Re: Need some diff help!!

What version of AllData are you running? I had a copy of AllData before I snagged the EPC...I can see from your post that the image quality of their diagrams has improved dramatically. The version I had was older and many of the pictures looked almost hand-drawn. Here's the same diagram from the EPC, they're almost identical: ![]() |
Re: Need some diff help!!
Hi what is EPC?
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
I used a slide hammer to get mine out. However keep in mind if you break that retainer spring you need to split the case to get the broken pieces out. I broke the one on the long shaft when installing my front locker.

It's the Snap-On/Proview software that GM dealers use in their Parts Departments. |
Re: Need some diff help!!
Hi is epc a one time buy or a yearly fee?
|
Re: Need some diff help!!

That said...I'm fairly certain that only an authorized GM dealer can purchase the software. I found a copy on the Internet a while back and pulled it down...not the most 'legal' of acquisitions, but neither was half of my mp3 collection. |

Re: Need some diff help!!
:jump: HELL YEAH FINALLY GOT IT OUT!!! :jump: but..... it looks like the spline kinda damaged looks like it got jammed and caused a little indent and the retaining clip looks broke but might not be, should it look like a "u" clip than a "c" clip, but overall I am happy I dont think that little bit of damage will do anything since its the part where the clip goes and it effected maybe 6 of the splines on the shaft portion not the tip. I have to charge my camera and I will post some pics. Thanks agian for everyones help especially Jarek M. since he got like a million emails from me concerning this part. Now for the control arms look forward for more threads for help or emails from me. :p :beerchug:

Re: Need some diff help!!
Oh one more thing there was NO sealant on the diff when I split it I wonder why that is. The only reason why I was taking it apart was to fix a small leak on the diff. Is that normal? Also what is the best sealant to use for a sealant cause I have RTV Black but I have heard not to use that cause the synthenic oil will eat it up.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
I use the red hi temp one, but the black one is good to.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Hi it is a c" clip if your looks like a u" buy 2 new ones and Differential Carrier Assembly Case Mating Surfaces Sealant GM P/N 1052942 or any good RTV but make sure you read the directions on how long to let it sit before you put the halfs together.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Use a small file and clean any burrs around the c-clip grove and on any splines. This will make it easier to remove again if needed. Use anaroebic sealer on the case halves not sure if that is the part number twr has cause i dont know the part number off hand. If yu use silicone it will push out and eventually leak
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Hi Humtech, that gm part # is anaroebic sealer, that is what gm uses on the case halfs in the USA, canda has a different part# but same sh-t.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Thanks I have the Permamek Black RTV which I was told is real good so I am going to use that plus stop at the dealer hopefully they have it stock. Is there a part number I can give them incase they are in deiet deiet mood.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
hi this is the sealer part #GM P/N 1052942
|
Re: Need some diff help!!

Not to stir anything up or anything but since GM is not in the business of making sealant (we found out whats that all about with DIII episode) and it didn't work the first time when they sealed it, why would you expect a different outcome using a GM part#... again. |
Re: Need some diff help!!
Hi your right gm sealing products are not made by them, they are likely made by permatex or someone else in the business of sealing products. Also you are not stirring anything up. Some parts are machined surfaces and when car companys put things to together at first,[only some parts] they don't use any sealing compond because they think its perfect and won't leak. After being in service for awhile they realized they screwed up and some start to leak. Then it turns into a problem with recalls sometimes or a repair when the customer complains about a leak.

Re: Need some diff help!!
Well iused the Ultra Black cause I was thinking the same thing, It went on good and clean I removed any extra once it dried. Man its a PITA to get the diff in having problems putting it on the jack, but I will get it on there had to go ot town this weekend.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
use straps.

Re: Need some diff help!!
RTV would always eventually leak on my front diff. Had to use GM anerobic stuff to get it to finally stop leaking
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
I used RTV on my diff a year ago. no leaks at all. However I replaced my axle seals at the same time and now one of those is leaking. Its a VERY slow leak just enough to keep the diff wet but no pudling on the ground. What a PITA the H2 front diff is! lol
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
Now I have a leak from the top I think its the vent tube, i suspect i filled the diff too much cause this never happened before. I mean it was a lot that came out I thought the diff was leaking then I looked at the top of driver side shock and noticed alot of fluid.
|
Re: Need some diff help!!
I was just informed that my front axle seal is leaking and that the "axle spacer" from my lift is broken as well. I just bought the truck with a 6 inch fabtech lift. I looked on their website and can't find a replacement part section. Anybody know where to get this part from? Should I just write to fabtech?
