Has anyone ever thought of relocating the spare tire off the rear door? I did do some measuring and the bracket and tire can fit under the rear deck but the exhaust would need to me re-routed. The tire would still be higher than the rear differential so clearance is not a problem.
Not sure if this is a major concern for me but it would give more visibility out the back window. Thoughts????? |

It might not reduce your ground clearance but I would think it would ruin the departure angle.
|
I'll make a check on that dimension although it looks like it can get mounted very high.
I wish GM would have included a wheel well in the rear cargo area and eliminate it off the back. |
Yea, I think Hummer's offroad criteria and required departure angle dictates the rear door mounting of the full size spare. And I'm glad Hummer sticks to its engineering goals.
The poor visibility out the rear window would only be marginally improved without the spare on the door. Backup cameras seem to be most effective in allowing you to see directly behind the vehicle. S. |

Back up camera is the way to go you can bring it up when your driving(there is some glare at night) There was a previos thread about a big vent behind tire and the guy removed it for a clean look . check FIND Those rear headreasts block your view ,they should have been removable |
The idea of moving tire doesn't appeal to me but to each his/her own.
The lens that one of the members posted a link to: http://www.rearlens.com looks promising to me. I am waiting for his promised report of its functionality. Best regards, Happy Jack |
I like the tire on the back

Ditto, it looks cool on the back.

In short, it's on the back for a reason...
|
If I have to change a tire out on a trail, I'd much rather have the tire on the gate (or roof) than underneath.
And I hated having to crank the tire up/down in my old truck. ![]() |
And I know all the guys doing the modifications like it on the back so they can carry a full size spare whether its 20/22/24 inch DUBS or 35 or 37 inch gnarly offroad tires. No space saver spares wanted by any of us.
