This is likely a dumb question, but VIN's on H3's arriving at the dealer recently have sequential numbers in the 82000-83000 range. There hasn't been that many built, has there?
Do they skip some numbers for some reason?

H3's are still really hot, but it looks like the H2 is hurting.  When am I gonna be able to start getting some nice lease rates on the '06 H2's?

I think what will hurt Hummer sales 1,2&3 &4...5 is if they feel they cannot change body styles for some reason. The H2 look is no longer sought after but if they make some changes to garner new excitement I think sales would pick up. If any vehicle does not change with the flow it will become obsolete. The IH Scout II was an awesome off roader but it's lack of change made it now extinct.

The 8 is on all of the H3's... from the beginning. So your last 8 numbers are always (for example)68123456. H2's are 6H123456. And H1 is 6E123456.

Nope, it doesn't fit my questions. Here is a VIN from a unit on my dealer's lot (via Gmbuypower.com):
5GTDN136268187186
My VIN ends 8136505, very early ones were 8100XXX. I thought the last 5 digits were the build sequence numbers, so are they up over 80000 built?
Why do I want to know? Just curious I guess.

Mine is in the 4,000s, too. Did they really sell 80k H3s in the US so far? That'd be a HUGE success for our ride.

Sorry to burst the bubble of the enormous H3 sales, but all the vehicles run at the plant are on sequence; therefore, Colorados and Canyons are in sequence with the H3. The differnces between the vehicles (other than obvious looks) is the numbers prior to the last eight in the VIN.
For example here is a Hummer VIN number 5GTDN136268155001:
5 Country of Build (1,4,5 denote USA)
G World Make Modifier G = General Motors
T H3
D GVWR/Brake System D = 5001-6000 GVWR Range (lbs) Hydraulic brakes
N Line Chassis N = Hummer
1 Series 1 - 4x4
3 Body Type 3 = Four-door cab/utility
6 Engine Type 6 = L52, 3.5L L5, MFI
2 Check digit (randomly generated)
6 Model Year 6 = 2006
8 Manufacturing Plant 8 = Shreveport, LA
155001 VIN Sequence number. First digit (1) is not used on this vehicle for VIN range and may change from year-to-year. For example, one year it might be 1, the following year 5. If the plant will produce greater than 99,999 vehicles it will be used and wil be zero until the 100,000 vehicle is produced. In this case, this vehicle was the 55,001 vehicle produced at Shreveport for model year '06 vehicles.
This is a VIN for a Colorado, notice the last eight digits...1GCCS136668155000...this was the vehicle produced immediately before the above Hummer.
All it means is that Shreveport has built over 80K vehicles this year.

That is true, but only because International Harvester did not have the money to redesign into a fuel efficient vehicle that could meet future emissions. One reason why they had such a reputation was they primarily used Loadstar engines, from their truck lines.
IH at that time was going broke, and in the early 80s, IH started selling off all their divisions, including their agricultural division to Tenneco, and since the IH name was part of the Ag division, Tenneco obtained the rights to Harvester.
They reincorporated as Navistar, with a division called International Engine.
Only reason I know this, is my ex-brother in-law was a head engineer in their AG division and ended up working for Tenneco.

This is part of not keeping up with changing times. In the era when Scouts were built they more than competed with the other trucks available-I don't think anybody's engines/ Drivetrains were more robust. And their off-road capabilities were better than most. With a few simple changes IE: fuel injection, converters, & the like, they would have been every bit as competitive as others.
