Default Re: Black it out!

Ive been putting a little thought into changing from bling to black....the more i look at my grill i think it needs to be black....and i want to change my rims too. With a black grill i think 22" Rockstars running 37" Toyo M/Ts would be schweet. I dont guess this will increase my offroad performance and im probably not going to do it as its not very economical but if i had to do it all over again id probably go that route...then put my stockers on for wheeling.

I decided to blackout all the chrome last weekend. I did mirrors, door handles, hood latches, hood handles and wheels flat black with "flattened" clear. The grill and roof racks are Rustoleum spray on bedliner. The tailgate is Herculiner for extra protection... I have a habit of throwin stuff like chains, shovels in/at the back. The only Chrome I left are the H2 emblems... heres a few pics

it looks really nice, phil.

I couldn't part with the chrome, i enjoy the dichotomy of the truck, and reaction to it, too much. Its too interesting to watch how a perfectly polished chromed H2 generates different reaction than one covered in mud & barely showing its white.

I believe you are referring to the disdain being shown when it's a bling machine because it's not being used "as it's supposed to be"

Phil, they look great.

I'm too lazy / busy to search for other threads on painting....what prep work is necessary to paint wheels, did you do it with tires on, and how does it really hold up?

I've been debating whether to spend the money to get some slightly used takeoffs to get powder coated before I upgrade my tires to 37s. If I just paint my current ones, that'll save me at least $500.

My balancing weights are on the outside of the rims. Can I just move them to the same spot on the inside and be close enough for a while? And if so, how do you do that. It looks like the tab holding them on is wedged under the bead and the bead on the inside edge of the tire overhands the rim quite a bit.

I need to get my replaced. I waited until they ran out of the older stock. What's cool is I busted one of the mirrors putting the black caps on and the service tech told me NOT to buy a new mirror. He'd just replace the whole thing.

Yeah, the original mirrors were defective, the dealer tried to fix, then replace--no matter what they vibrated and wouldn't return after they were folded in.
I rented an H2 in Florida and it had the same mirror problems.
The new ones are much better--except for the chrome.

I'm so proud to finally be able to post my truck in this thread. Last weekend I rattle canned my rims using the same stuff Phild used and also painted the ski racks with a flat paint. All I gotta do now is Line-X the grille and I'll be done.
