Rains soak capital region, close offices, highways, rail lines

By MARTY NILAND / Associated Press

Storms that drenched the capital region with more than 7 inches of rain on Monday closed government offices, highways and commuter rail lines.
Although the federal government remained open, several buildings were closed because of flooding, including the Internal Revenue Service headquarters, the Justice Department and the National Archives. Despite the high water, archives spokeswoman Susan Cooper said all records and national treasures remained "safe and dry."
