Talking I GOT IT!

You all probably don't care, but they just re-opened Mt. St. Helens for climbing. It is the only active volcano in the lower 48. Climbing is by permit only, and the mountain has been closed to any activity for 1-1/2 years.

Next Friday, the 1st 100 permits to climb an ACTIVE VOLCANO are released. Guess who now has a permit? ME....ME! ME! ME!

So in about a week or so, I'll have pictures of inside the crater of an active volcano. I haven't been this excited since I was part of a geology group that camped in the crater about 10 years ago (I was a geologist back then). WOOHOO!

It would be totally cool if it actually erupted while I was at the edge of the crater! Those would be some great photos!

That is all...

Congrats evl.

I'm so sick of wheeling on inactive volcanos. An active one would be nice for a change.

I'll be trying to find a good line up the rockfield on the way up. Maybe we could convince the Forest Service to allow a Hummer Happening on the crater rim? I'm going to be carting up all my nice camera equipment with me, so lots of good pictures, let's hope the weather is nice!

I flew over & around it about a year ago. Amazing to see the destruction up close. 25 years later and all of those billions of board feet of timber are still laid out like so many toothpicks.

I can't imagine what that looks like in person.

Living here in the NW, I've seen countless pictures & video from every conceivable angle. But they don't even begin to convey the magnitude of destruction caused back in '81. I got to fly around the volcano back then, but as a teenager didn't fully appreciate the enormity what I was looking at.

We could see the plume all the way over here in B.C.

We were all dancing around laughing and cheering, "The Americans are blowing up! The Americans are blowing up!"

I was lucky enough to climb it before it blew (as a small kid) and actually could see the old top from the bedroom window of my parents house growing up and watched the eruption from my house. I'm going to do a night climb (leave at midnight) to be able to look down on the crater and maybe see some laval oozing from the dome in the dark.

If yo could see that thing when it blew, you're lucky to be alive.
