Living here in the NW, I've seen countless pictures & video from every conceivable angle. But they don't even begin to convey the magnitude of destruction caused back in '81. I got to fly around the volcano back then, but as a teenager didn't fully appreciate the enormity what I was looking at.

We could see the plume all the way over here in B.C.

We were all dancing around laughing and cheering, "The Americans are blowing up! The Americans are blowing up!"

I was lucky enough to climb it before it blew (as a small kid) and actually could see the old top from the bedroom window of my parents house growing up and watched the eruption from my house. I'm going to do a night climb (leave at midnight) to be able to look down on the crater and maybe see some laval oozing from the dome in the dark.

If yo could see that thing when it blew, you're lucky to be alive.
