DAMN
Nobody has yet come up with the design I was telling everyone. Crap, their all over Jeeps and other rigs.
And it doesn't have to just be a can holder. It could be used for all sorts of stuff and would be just above a rear end traffic accident

Like the old Conifer rubicon rack that goes over the top of the spare and the jerrys cans were mount on each side. That would be great but those never had a way where the jerry cans cap was secured.
Hey this set up I'm doing right now only cost me $100 bucks including the brand new olive drab Scepter can. With DOT Compliant vented no spill cap and there is no way to remove the cap until you unlock the strap that holds it in the cradle.

Personally, I wasn't worried too much about securing the cap, but it's a good idea to be able to lock it down.
If you take the one you posted above and made a bar that clamped to the leg of the A-frame post that goes up from the bottom of the tire carrier and then have a plate welded at the end to accept different "attachments" it would be cool. And yeah it would be like those racks, except only one.
You could then mount the holder that you posted to that plate. Take that off if you don't need that, and put a different attachment like a high-lift mount, basket, or some other convenient mount. Simple bolt-ons once you have the piece of 2x4 tubing cut at the right angle and welded up.

Thanks for the pics! Great Set up. That site makes me miss my Defender 90. I was hoping you could post a pic of the area where its mounted to your tire carrier with the carrier open. Just curious about how you attached it.

I ll try to put more pics up this weekend. the issue I have had with this setup is the Scepter Jerry can likes to expand alot with altitude change and temp change (so the thing cants to the side about ten degrees) so I should move the mount over to the left more and up a bit so I still have access to the release paddle. One other thing is make sure you leave the spare on when marking the mounting holes because every tire is diffrent and you want thing to fit right. I also added a 90 degree bracket on the bottom, because when empty there was not enough weight on the carrier to keep it from bouncing upward.

Are you talking about something like this (from a jeep catalog)?

Re: Gas Tank Holder On Factory Swing Away
This is closer to what I was thinking. Higher up and over to the side so you still have visibility out the middle. But instead have a brace angling up from the angled brace going up to hold the tire. and have a vertical brace directly under the gas can carrier. I think you could only get one on the driver's side because the rear won't open if it's on the pass. side.
