Im not very familiar with the details of engines, so can someone tell me what an air pump is for? Is it supposed to be something like a supercharger?

Supercharges the catalyst...

It is only turned on during startup to add pressurized air to the exhaust manifold to help the catalyst reach operating temps faster, lowering emissions faster than if an air pump is not used. It is an electric pump so the engine does not have to turn a pulley.
