Heh Scout... I can relate. Our Director was here for 18 years and just the oppisite of yours in that she was very young. She came to my company out of High school at 19 years old as a pool secretery and two years later went right to Director..!!!!

Think about it...sort of like street sweeper to president of the USA in one leap. Anyway she new nothing..our department managed to run it's self for 18 years with out her input .
She was nothing more then a Figure Head...(HEAD...!!!!!) If you know what I mean. ..and I ain't kiden..!!.
She finally got the AX when the new owners took over. Last I heard...she was tending bar.
'We all use to bang heads with her when it came to running our areas.
We now have a new Female who knows even less promoted from our new sister company. This one just sits in her office and talks on the phone. She never get's involved ..Thanks God..

Scouts Out, I feel for you. People like her are why I gave up a stripe and retired from the Air Force.
But you're doing the right thing, put her in her place about the people who work for you. There is no reason to yell at someone who works for you.
Keep documenting
And most of all don't yell back and keep your calm. She's the nut case. Not you.
