A trash bag will work just as well. The reflective capability of a space blanket has negligible or no insulative or heat gain effects compared to plain plastic. They are worth having in the vehicle as they are compact and cheap, but don't be fooled in to thinking it will do anything for you that a trash bag won't do. A couple of the big black trash bags makes a great sleeping bag, and they work well as ponchos in the rain, etc.
