does it smell like burning rubber? My dad is having the same trouble with his 06 SUT. I have an 06 SUV but i dont have the smell.

Oh, try brushing your teeth!   
FWIW, I notice my tires have the burning rubber smell after a drive.

how would I check for a leaky heater core?

check and see if ur low on coolant and feel the pass. side floorboard under the mat for wetness

coolant has a kinda sweet smell
the heater core might not be leakin bad enough yet to get the floorboard wet
id take it to the dealer if under warranty or to ur local shop (that u trust) if not under warranty
let them do a pressure test and to find where the coolant has went
i dont charge for the pressure test at our shop
if they do charge u it should be just a little charge ... 10 bucks maybe

Had the same problem with my 05 h2. It had 3400 miles when I noticed a collant type smell, but no coolant leaking anywhere. Took it in to the dealership, and the water pump had a defective bearing. They said they have had a lot of h2s with this problem. End result, they replaced the pump with a new one and since then theres been no smell.

Yes.. I could say its like a burning smell of rubber? Has your dad taken it to the dealer yet?
