Well JAYB1RD answered most of it, but yes most of the problems with the front diff seem to be due to the aluminum housing. It flexes under stress, allowing the pinion gear to move which results in the gears getting chipped. I've gone through two front diffs already. Chipped teeth off the ring gear first time around and chipped the pinion gear the second time. There was also a problem with the hardening of the gears in early builds. GM supposedly went back to the manufacturer to change the hardening process last summer.

Re: Can a locker be put in the non-adv H3?
The diffs are open on front and rear. There is no limited slip feature.
The rear locker is a very good addition to any off road vehicle.
Due to the weak design of the H3 front housing, I would not put in a locker until GM beefs it up. After that, replace the front assembly if it ever breaks to the later model and add the locker. You will always risk breakage if you are not careful regardless.
Yes, the eaton is OEM from Hummer. The one trail duty offers is a real nice unit and Phil over there is awesome.
Adding a true locker does require replacing the entire diff assembly, just as the one from Trail Duty is a complete locker/diff.
Adding a locker is the only way to get both wheels spinning together. IMHO a 4X4 without lockers is not really a true 4x4 as you can not spin all 4 wheels together. However, there are ways around this, such as BTM. Taking the time to learn what this is and how to effectively manipulate the capabilities of your Hummer, is what wheeling is all about.

Re: Can a locker be put in the non-adv H3?
Agreed, BTM can actually enhance your off roading experience with more thought and planning going into your line and how to put your truck into the obsticales. I have a base H3 and was very concerned about the crawing and rock work. With good spoters, BTM, and proper air pressure I went almost everywhere the H1 and a H3 with a locker went. It took more work but in the end was more fun. The two things i bailed on was a rock slide down with full frame contact (the other had full shielding) and a very steep face that I screwed up on and got spining half way up.
