How can they not change it . When you remove the head you would contaminate the oil and coolant.Usually coolant gets into the oil upon removal.

The dealer should know better.

My invoice showed an oil change, filter & coolant. Latest onstar report confirmed the new oil life.

I agree, in fact, GM pays them to change the oil AND the coolant after a cylinder head removal.
From the Service Manual:
57. Install NEW engine oil. Refer to Engine Mechanical Specifications .
58. Install NEW coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .

However, all they will be paid for is GM authorized coolant and oil; therefore, getting them to add synthetic will be up to the dealer.

If the head job is done correctly (such as new torque-to-yield bolts used where required, torque is applied correctly, valves are lapped correctly into the new head, it will be as good as new. The quality of any repair is dependent upon the technician performing the job.

I figured they would have to change the fluids. Yey! dealer does something right.

Im sure if you were using synthetic they would replace with same ,im sure they know its not good to go back to regular oil after synthetic.
I think Im just planning ahead for for a head replacement

Guys,

I have a little chit chat with my Service Guy at the dealship. And we agreed on something

Please do not anticipate this problem.

Rough Idle without the check engine light can be a multitude of things.

Same goes for the Check engine light without the rough idle.

Rough idle with check engine light? Then you are in the head replacement club.

If it happens it will get fixed.

If you dodged a bullet like me, you'll have enjoyed your time with your HUMMER and not have fretted over every mile.

Life is short, just drive it.

My service guy at my dealership, said I should anticipate this problem based on my H3's vintage, mileage, and hard street usage. And I wasn't even questioning him on the topic, he offered his opinion on his own.

Thank you, even though the problem is bad for those with engines built prior to 287591, a rough idle with the idiot light, will not always indicate a bad cylinder head (reference the latest bulletin I will be posting in a few minutes). There are many items such as plugs, ignition coils, fuel, injectors, even a blocked air filter that can give the same symptoms and depending on the problem, the same codes.
However, like you say do not anticipate the problem. If it happens, it happens, and like I have said a few times, even if you are out in the middle of nowhere, you have at least a 95 percent chance of putting a few thousand miles on the engine after the light turns on and the idle turns rough. So, the majority will NOT be stranded in the middle of nowhere.
