Lightbulb Nav Choice

I'm thinking about upgraded my nav unit to a touch screen, I've narrowed it down to three choices, would like your opinion please.

AVIC D3X would be my choice, I looked into doing a double DIN conversion to my Z06 (stock is DIN and 1/2) but since I hardly drive the car I have decided against it. I looked at units and for the money this unit seemed to be the best one, I have 3 friends running this unit (1 in a H2 and 2 in Escalades) and they are all very happy with them.

Good Luck whichever way you decide to go

Well I have the AVIC-Z2.

While I dont know what the differences between the D3 and the Z2 are except for the hard drive, I can tell you from personal experience that I see absolutely NO point for the 30gb hard drive if you have an iPod. If that is the only difference between the 2 models, then I would get the D3.... especially for the cost savings.

I do like my unit, BUT if GM would just do like Acura and many others, and just make a GOOD factory nav unit with touchscreen and bluetooth, then maybe we wouldn't have to change units anyways.

Kinda funny that a $70,000.00 vehicle gets beaten in technology by your standard issue $20,000.00 Japanese import.

I had the Z1 unit in my H3 with all the goodies attached.. ie. Blutooth, IPod, backup camera and steering remote.

I have to say I was quite impressed with the speed of the hard drive in the Z1 over the DVD of the AVIC-D1 (I had installed the first time) and the interface itself was very intuitive. I would say my only complaint is the IPod interface was a bit sparse but hopefully they have changed that over the past year.

My only other experience with in car nav is the GM Factory and one Kennwood unit. I found the Pioneer to be better quality.

If it was up to me i'd get the AVIC Z3 based on experience. Also look up the AVIC Z1 install link in the H3 forums. There's some good info in there.

Just me 2 cents worth...

I've called around houston and asked for installing prices, so far its around 1300-1800

Does anyone think this is a good deal, or am I getting ripped off?

I just purchased the Avic Z2 with the Bluetooth, iPod, Sirius, Color B/U Cam, GM/Onstar/Chime, and steering wheel kits. All together about $2,100.

I'm getting it installed for $ 450 next week. With the Z2, you have the Nav on the HDD, so it is more efficient that running off the DVD. Plus, your DVD/CD drive is free to be used so you don't have to get a separate drive.

Not to mention, when you insert a CD, it will be ripped straight to the HDD!!

Pretty sweet. Also, there's a Bypass to allow FULL functionality while driving.

Check out: www.avic411.com and read up on them before you buy!

Good luck!!

I have the D3 and I love it! The ipod control function is awesome! I really enjoy playing movies from the Ipod. P.S. I paid $350 to have it installed.

This sounds pretty close to right on..... if you still have all the factory Bose stuff you will only need one interface which is approximately $100+shipping. plus Im sure the shop will have another few bucks in misc. supplies etc....

Ok, another question for everyone,

This is where I am......I really like the AVIC D3, but have read and read that the GPS isn't all the good, bad turn by turn and so on...what do you think? (if you have this unit)

Also, does anyone know of a unit out there that is like the toyota brand...

I think it is way too much to pay for a very basic install.
Look on crutchfield.com and enter all the info about year
and model and the prompt will tell you what gear you will
need to buy. They will include all the diagrams of the Hummer
with copies of pictues of the real dash board in the manual.
Plus their Tech support people are A#1 IMO

It might be just me but I would keep the extra $1300 +++ for
installing it.

X2

That's waaayyy over priced for an install.

See my previous post above, but I'm getting the Z2 installed, plus 6-7 additional modules, for $ 450!!

Also, I purchased almost all my stuff from Crutchfield. Yes they sent me install instructions but that ONLY included the removal of the factory radio in my 03 H2.

Granted, I did get the Z2 unit and camera from eTronics...

Ok, after much sought after research, I've decided to buy the Eclipse AVN5510

From what I've read the Eclipse have the best Nav system, but lack a bit in the audio section.
Where the Pioneer has the best Audio, but lacks in the Nav sytem then the Kenwood also has a great Nav but has terrible menu layout.

I'd rather have a great nav system.....plus the Eclipse has a full 7" monitor..

Thanks for all the suggestion.

Ya, TEX that is what I heard to but I got the pioneer Z2 due to the fact that I would miss the 6 disc cd player and the Z2 allows you to zip CD's into it. Good luck.
