No you are correct. Only Chrysler used a ring gear on the torque converter with a flexplate to the crank. GM has never used a design that wasn't turning the crank first from the flexplate.

1) The flywheel had come off but buggered the drive plate too
2) Parts are taking 10-14 days and I had to drive a Ford Fiesta on Sunday......
All I can say is thank god I did not take it into the main dealer. Last time I had a problem (a cat collapsed and was causing mis-fires due to the back pressure it) they charged me in excess of ?950 (about $1800) and took 3 weeks to get the parts in.
