High snorkels are solely for the testosterone factor. The H1's fording depth is 30" regardless of snorkel height. Here does seem to be some "safety factor" for the bow wave that is created by driving through 30" standing water.

Above 30" (or above the hood) you engine will continue to run (probably), but there is a good chance of damage to elec. componenets & water leaking into places it shouldn't be.

PS - If you're driving through any water of any depth, check the geared hubs afterwards - even though oil isn't leaking out, water may have leaked in.
