Driver Crashes Ferrari Enzo On PCH
MALIBU, Calif. -- A speeding Ferrari whose driver may have been racing crashed Tuesday on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, prompting the closure of the roadway and an investigation to determine who was behind the wheel, officials said.
Paramedics sent to PCH at Decker Road about 6:15 a.m. treated one person at at the scene for a minor injury, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Ron Haralson.
That man, whose name was not immediately released, told authorities he was the owner of the Ferrari Enzo, but claimed that he was the passenger and that the driver ran off after the crash.
"The fact (is) that the passenger is the registered owner of the vehicle, from the Beverly Hills-Bel Air area. The passenger had blood on his mouth and both airbags on the car deployed, but only the driver's side airbag had blood on it, not the passenger side," said Sgt. Phillip Brooks.
As of late Tuesday morning, there had been no arrests in the case, according to the watch commander at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.
The Ferrari Enzo, a limited-edition vehicle worth between $600,000 and $1 million, has a published top speed of 225 mph.
"We have the passenger, who told us the driver did flee from the scene," Brooks said. "And we... followed some footprints up the side of the hill in an effort to locate the driver."
Authorities believe the Ferrari "was traveling at least 100 mph and it will probably be a lot more than that once we conclude our investigation," Brooks said.
Authorities said the driver of the Ferrari might have been racing a motorist in a Mercedes Benz.
The impact sheared the Ferrari in half, with the entire front section separated from the rest of the vehicle.
"For a million dollars, you get a very good passenger-safety system, and apparently in this case it did work," Brooks said.
Some electrical service was interrupted in the area after a power pole was struck by the car. At least one lane of PCH remained closed late Tuesday morning while crews worked to replace the damaged pole.

I think there are less than 100 enzos in the states (less than 99 now!)so that is an ultra rare Ferrari. If it were mine, I'm sure I'd puch it quite often and it sucks he wrecked it. At least it went down in a blaze of glory and no one was seriously injured or killed.
It kind of reminds me of the hockey player Danny Heatley's fatal ferrari accident here in Atlanta. It happened 5 min from my house. I went by the scene on the way to the gym before I knew it happened and saw yellow Ferrari parts strewn across the roadway. It was a sad story and I often go to the bar where they were hangin out before they wrecked.
I think these guys buy the cars and think that since they cost so much, they can handle in manners that defy physics! Being a corvette owner, you have to know the limits of your car before you just jump in and hit the twisties full bore. I am guilty of spinning out because I thought I could handle better than it did and from not having a fast car for over five years!

Ooops.

A detached wheel means he hit something -- likely an armco barrier -- at Le Mans. This guy seems to have a staionary object fixation.

According to this article, he may have been racing a SLR:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11488164
But wait, there's more twist to this story, not only he's probably the driver and is denying that because he was under the influence. According to another board, he is a race car driver of Cirtek Motorsport, he raced a Ferrari 360 in the 2005 Le Mans.

Reading about this guy's background, my guess is that his company was programmed for failure after paying him a huge salary. I've seen deals like this before.

Here's the same dipsh*t driving a black Enzo a couple of months before the crash:

I do like the black Enzo better than the red. Also, the black wheels are nice. Sounds like an after market exhaust.

The story keeps getting better. Now he's up on GTA charges.
Quote:
LOS ANGELES - The Swedish video game entrepreneur involved in the 162-mph crash of a Ferrari has been arrested, accused of grand theft for an unauthorized collection of exotic cars, authorities said.
Detectives concluded that the wrecked Enzo Ferrari — one of only 400 made — along with a Mercedes and another Enzo Ferrari in Stefan Eriksson's collection were actually owned by British financial institutions, said Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.
Eriksson apparently brought the cars to Los Angeles when he moved from Britain last year, but the financial institutions that held the titles said his payments had lapsed. Authorities have said the $600,000 Mercedes had been reported stolen to London's Scotland Yard. The Ferrari was worth more than $1 million.
All three cars have been confiscated, and Eriksson, 44, was arrested at his Bel-Air home Saturday, Whitmore said.
He is being held without bail because U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement put a hold him, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.
The Ferrari crash spun into a web of mystery when Eriksson told authorities he was only a passenger in the car and that the driver was a German acquaintance he knew only as Dietrich. He said Dietrich ran into the hills, but a search by deputies turned up no one.
Officials have questioned Eriksson's story, noting that only the driver's side air bag had blood on it and Eriksson had a cut lip. The front of the red Ferrari crumpled when it slammed into a poll on the Pacific Coast Highway on Feb. 21.
Eriksson was an executive with Gizmondo, a European video game company that filed for bankruptcy.

So true and well put....
It's amazing how some roads at 55-75mph seem perfectly fine, but when driven in excess of 100mph you suddenly get "air" and other charming issues that you normally wouldn't see.
It's almost as if these canyon roads and other heavily used surfaces weren't designed to be raced on?
It's all typical, as several people have pointed out, it's only natural to want to enjoy our toy and push it hard. Shiet like this happens, happened and will continue to happen as long as we have our toys. Glad they survived, too bad about the car. Nobody on F-chat knew the guy, just some obscure wealthy sob.
