we all start ignorant on a subject untill the facts are made clear to us ,than all but the enlightened are in fact stupid and unable to learn or grasp the facts. if you belive an open element air filter that draws it's air from a heat soaked engine compartment is better than a system where you draw colder outside air in there is nothing more to say. I just hate to see folks being hoodwinked by bogus claims of more power and better fule milage .if you like it because it looks kool when you pop your hood and show your buddys that's kool with me .I was shocked in 1965 to see Smokey's 1965 chevell (NASCAR) with a sealed air induction that sucked air in from the vents at the base of the windshield .THAT SMOKEY KNEW HIS **** . you want to guess why he didn't run a system that got it's air from a hot engine compartment . ?

Old man,I take that as a compliment .and yes I have heard of a heat sheld and have not seen one that will work as well as a fully sealed system . I have also heard of a dyno and a thermomiter and have tested (on my 2005 Chevy 2500 hd with a Dmax ) and no shield available worked as well as the stock air box from a 2006 that I retrofited to my 2005. It must be nice to be young and know everything .and by the way this 56 year old man can say with pride that not a day goes by that I cant learn something new . just for fun light a cig and put it iside of your choice of shields and see if you dont see smoke escape . and by the way Carol Shelby is an old man too ,mayby you know more than him too .

Wow, you f'up the install, get crap in your motor from sucking in some dirt from the mangled tube and blame the filter? As I stated above, the Airaid factory replacement along with the MIT have been on my H2 for 40K. The tube & tb are very clean, no dirt or oil.

K&N would be my 4thor5th choice in a pinch ,I would like to keep most of the dirt out of the engine as I will be travleing on dirt roads and trails a good bit . so paper or foam seams a better choice .

Exactly. Maybe he's just imagining that he's having intake problems with the K&N filter. If having a K&N filter doesn't void the warranty, then all he has to do is take it to the dealer and let them figure it out. Won't cost him a dime.

Volumetric efficiency is the prime consideration when you're talking about cylinder filling on a normally aspirated engine, so you're correct to a point that a higher flow filter can assist in a better VE. This is where the more flow = more power gets it's basis.

However, the gains claimed by K&N occur at rpm's well above the H2's operating range- so they don't really matter. It's akin to running a 4" fuel line from the tank to get more fuel to the motor; you're never going to operate it at that flow rate, so it's unnecessary.

The downside to the K&N filter is that it will pass more dirt while not providing any usable performance gain on the H2 since you're not going to operate it in a flow range above the stock filter anyway.

I forgot to mention- Smokey Yunick was one of my heros growing up and I've got a few of his books. If you're interested at all in performance modifications, his writing style is "no holds barred" and doesn't mince words when it comes to all the performance BS on the market.

I latched on to his book, "How to hot rod the small block Chevy" when I was 15 and took it to heart. It was the single text that put my cars ahead of all the guys running Cherry Bombs, air shocks, and flipped upside down air cleaner covers
