Default removing onstart installing pocket?

I been looking at pictures and some replace the dash onstar buttons for a pocket. How is this done? is it a kit?

Here is what I did. I purchased METRA 99-2011 install kit for the aftermarket double DIN head unit I will be installing.

I used the pocket in the kit to replace the onstar unit. I removed the black "front face" of the onstar unit. This provided the mounting bracket for the pocket. I cut a hole in the onstar face plate to allow the pocket to slide in from the front and hot glued it in. The onstar face plate is curved so I sanded it until the pocket sits flush/flat. About a 1/4 of a inch of the onstar face plate is visible on the sides of the pocket, so I use finer grit sandpaper to smooth out the sanding marks.

There was an actual GM part made for trucks without the OnStar...but I never seen one. Part #15200468, COMPARTMENT, Instrument Panel

It's number 30 in the image below:

It's list price is $67.58. That just seemed like a completely ridiculous price. I'm glad you got it for much less...$20 much easier to swallow.

i try never to pay list.
i will go to part warehouses and such to buy my parts (thats where i ordered this from)

the only thing that i pay list or retail for is stuff i have to or stuff that it would be just as easy to get locally without shipping as the cost would be to ship the item

I'm not away of any difference in that area of the dash between 03 and 04+...it should work.

Perhaps the part just wasn't available in 03...

Agreed.
I just looked at an '06 today and it is identical to my '03 except mine is cleaner and the stereo headunit from the factory was a large screen
