Default Toyo M/T's < Cooper STT?? In Mud w/ pics...

OK today went out wheeling in some pretty nast gumbo mud and steep hills. There was a group of about 10 of us. One yellow H2 had the 37X12.5 Toyo MT's. I am the SUT w/ Cooper STT's 37 x12.5 also. He got stuck in the deep mud and I had to recover him. Then on the hill climb, he spun and spun as they seemed to be clogged .He was unable to climb it and had to go around. All of the H2's including the ones w/ stock BFG's climbed it without incident. Both H3's with the duellers had the same problem as the H2 w/ Mt's. He was last in line, but it didnt appear any worse that when the second or third H2 went up.

Also his warn winch was unable to unstick him from the gumbo, thats why we needed to yank him with mine. I didnt even have to yank that hard and he came right out. This made me a little dissapointed with the winch. I realize he was probably suctioned in pretty good, but as I said I didnt have to snatch him that hard.

The coopers also seemed to clear out better (not in the pic obviosly!!!). The duellers just flat out suck in even the slightest bit of mud.

cool thread.

i've seen M/T tires fail on hills that look quite a bit like that (and which shouldn't be a big deal), and its left me a bit perplexed as well. I've also been the beneficiary of being "first in line" up a muddy hill... :P But if you said it didn't change much then...

i'll have to also take another peek at le coopus tirimus

Like I said, he was the last one up, but it didnt look that much worse. Also you can see how clogged they are and on one of the H3 pics you can see that there is not a deep pit of mud in the bottom.

Also, this is only on dirt and mud so I cant say which are better on rocks, sand, etc.

Any commets on the winch vs snatch? I was really suprised.

I have found that the STTs provide a ridiculously good grip in mud and on wet rock. On my old truck I used to air down my MTRs as far as reasonable to get as much traction as possible. I usually offroad the STTs at 22 PSI because I get plenty of traction at that pressure and would rather have the extra clearance.
I was a little apprehensive about buying them when I did because of the lack of track record back then, but in the size I have, I would pay a little more for them than for any other tire. The fact that they are actually cheaper makes it an easy call for me.

Phil- There was lots and lots of spinning going on, but that type of mud just didnt want to come out of his tires. The coopers released it better.
The driver seemed like he knew what he was do and I think he may have been a little dissapointed in his tires. I should have attemped the hill again after he went to prove this but I didn't!

Ken- Its a sweet little place and its close!
