I was getting my doors repainted, so the hardware was already removed. It seemed like the perfect time to replace the factory door handle surround bezels with some chromed billet ones. I wanted to keep the ABS "chromed" handles because I'm in the snow so much.

Here's my problem: The handles now rattle. The one behind the drivers door is the worst. It sounds like glass breaking whenever I sut that door. Yhe handles are loosest in the vertical directions. Anyone experience this and/or have a fix? Thanks!

Question: Did this start after you painted your door and re-installed the hardware?

Thanks guys.

Yes it started after they replace the plastic bezls with the metal ones.

Just to be clear, its the handles, not the bezels that are loose & rattling. The guy who did the swap for me did so for free and said there's no adjustment. He said there's just a c-clip holding the fulcrum pin which keeps the handles in place. I remember a thread talking about doing the swap. I'll see if it shows what the "guts" look like.

The new bezels come with new pins for the handles.

He may have not put the new ones in, or he did them incorrectly.

Thanks, HGW. When he described the process, he aied that per the instructions, he drilled the old ones out of the bezels, and replaced them with the new ones. I will see what my dealer says.

Here's the thread. I'm doing this swap (chrome to black) soon so if you have any updates/other insights, Tower, it would be great to read them. Thanks much.

Thank you, Rodster! That's just the thread I was looking for. It doesnt seem to say much about swapping the springs & pins, so I called the vendor and my service manager. I'm waiting to hear back from the big cheeses.

Okay, a friend of a friend is a HummerTech. Sight unseen, he thinks the tension on the springs need adjustment. I will hopefully get to see him next week. Whatever the fix turns out to be, trust that I will post it here.

tower You beat Me to it. I'm glad they mentioned spring tension. I was going to suggest that. I had to do it to My Girl but, it has been a while. I was going to suggest letting dealer look at it.
Glad You got the info.

My handles arrived today (thanks, partsguy) so was able to get a good look at the back-side workings.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see much opportunity for adjusting the spring tension; however, if the spring wasn't installed properly, that would definitely cause the handles to rattle. Note the spring ends . . .

Thank you Taz and Rodster! Perfect photo! Clearly there doesn't appear to be a way to adjust the spring. A friend spoke with a HummerTech buddy of his who said he could do it. I don’t know if that means deforming them by "unwinding" them beyond their elastic limit or replacing the entire spring. But if this guy is willing to ameliorate the rattle, he can use Voodoo, for all I care. I may need to drive to San Diego to have it done, but it's little things like this that keep me up at night (the meaning of life is easy). I'll follow up with y'all.

You guys are so great! I feel so supported. I love this site.
