Hey all,

I am seriously trying to convince my brother and his wife to get a Hummer H3. He has a Rubicon. He likes to have something that is more comfortable on-road and roomier, while capable enough for vacation in Colorado or Utah. I would assume that he would go for the Adventure package, along with side-curtain airbags and automatic tranny (wife cannot drive manual).

A few questions regarding it's 4wd system (it's not crystal clear on the Hummer site):

1. Can you lock the rear locker in 4-HI? (not a big deal, but just asking)
2. When you lock the rear locker, is traction control still acting in the front axle??
3. I have heard that Adventure package has different springs and shocks??? Is this true?? Does Adventure still have Bilstein shocks??
4. Since it's an automatic tranny, it comes with stability control (which he likes on-road). When you are in 4-HI or 4-LO, does the stability control shutt OFF?? (big issue)
5. Does ABS have a separate off-road algorithm??

1. No. Only in 4-low.
2. Stabilitrak is disabled when put in 4-low.
3. Not sure.

3. Different shock rates, same springs.
5. Yes, from what I have been told, but it is based more on the PCMs calibration, not that of the EBCM. The PCM goes into a complete different program when in 4-wheel LO lock. Throttle, trans and engine response is totally different. This is what affects the ABS, since ABS is not only brake pulsation, it is also engine control (injectors shut off, engine retarded, etc. to reduce power).

As a former TJ owner, who thought the TJ was great off-road, I recommend the H3. From the little off-roading I have done in TN, it is better. In addition, there is NO comparison when driving on highways on long trips.
The biggest fault I could find with a TJ was how uncomfortable it was on long trips, especially if there were high cross winds.

Thanks all for the responses!

I thought that when you lock the rear, the front axle is still being controlled by traction control.

Example: if your rear locker is locked and you are in mud where the whole rear axle is slipping along with one front wheel, then can you move forward??

Are you the Thai from toyota-4runner.org? Thats a pretty good forum and if you're the same person then I know that you know your stuff.

I had a 2003 4Runner Sport and was very happy with it. The lease was running out and it was time to look again. I considered another 4Runner, but I really like the H3 much, much more.

Sorry - I have no clue to as to the answer for your last question, just wanted to say hello.

So is there a way to manually turn off the traction control? I know you can press the button but nothing happens. I'm talking about the button all the way on the right of the 4X4 button panel. It looks like it supposed to light up too. Just wondering since the owners manual is very vaugue on this.

You need to hold that traction control button in for about 6 seconds for it to activate

Actually, all you have to do is press it to turn off traction control. Holding it for up to five seconds also turns off stabilitrak, if so equipped.

"To turn the system off,
press and release the TCS
button located on the
instrument panel.
This light will come on
steady when the traction
control system has
been turned off. This
light flashes when TCS
is active."

"You can turn StabiliTrak® off if you
ever need to using the TC (traction control) on/off
button. If you press and hold the TC button for
five seconds, the StabiliTrak® system and the traction
control system will turn off. When this is done, the STAB
SYS OFF message will be displayed on the DIC."

Thanks for the info. Maybe I need to have the dealer check it out. When I press the button no lights indicate that the system is on or off. When I go to 4WD low lock, the light comes on letting me know that the system has been disabled.

As for MAC, these morons pop up on all kinds of forums. If you ignore it, it will go away.
