Does that mean he had his from GM and didn't send them back for the recall?

I'm starting to believe what they told me at the dealership about the recall. Nobody has them, and to narrow down one place in Michigan (huh) it makes it even more weird.

Who knows!?!?

H3Lady,

Thanks for the investigation on this one! I just caught it in the other thread and it's good to know that they were "recalled" to include the locking cap in the package. That makes sense on both the "recall" and the right way of doing the cap and door. They were going to sell a good amount of them...now they'll sell the **** out of em!

Thanks again for looking into it. I knew you'd come through!

Not a recall, just on hold. A recall is a legal action taken by the manufacturer to fix a problem, either safety, emissions or customer satisfaction.

When I had mine installed, they left the locking gas cap on, I had to ask then to remove, it was a pain to have to unlock both, is it 1978 again???

I broke more nails on that thing.....

I was too young to remember 1978, but hearing of people syphoning gas tanks makes me panic. In comparison to other SUV's, our tank isn't the biggest, but I'm sure that people think we store a ton of gas in it due to the size of the vehicle.

Along with comments on how expensive Hummers are in general...while flattered, I get tired of the "We're paying you too much" comments around the office.

I don't know if Novi has the complete kit yet or there is a stock number yet. But, it's worth the few extra buck for all the compliments you get...

I remember the gas crunch of the 70's. I remember sitting in line for 2 hours to get gas in the Cutlass - Yuck... I read a story that crooks have a Super sucking maching with a hose that they stick in the tank and can do 20 gallon in under 1 minute. They hide the storage tank in a regulare truck bed and look like a joe smoe and you need knew what hit you..

GAS IS BECOMING PRECIOUS...As an "older" person I see future problems with gas if it gets to over 3$

I would like to interject that new GM vehicles have an anti-siphoning valve installed in the bottom of the fuel neck. You can no longer siphon the fuel from your own tank for the lawn mower or (dare I say it) the snowblower.
Not saying it is impossible to siphon the fuel, someone who has the right tool can bypass the valve; however, the neighborhood kid (or his dad) won't be able to suck fuel from your tank.
The H3 should have the same anti-siphon valve.
I also remember the 70s and the idiots who would wait in one line for an hour or better, when the service station a half-mile away sold fuel for ten cents a gallon more, but had no line.

I'm less worried about people taking stuff out of the fuel tank and more worried about people trying to put stuff in it.

I haven't even gotten my H3 yet, and my wife and I are already getting the "why would you buy that thing" comment. Ignorance is bliss.

It's amazing what people will do. I owned a shelby cobra replica and where it would make most people giddy when they saw it, there was a certain element of people that seemed irked by it. As an example, we sat in restaraunt in view of our friend's cobra that was parked in the street. A guy comes up to the car, gives it a quick look over...and begins kicking the car!!!!

It seems as though Hummers have some of this negative following and that is the reason I will be getting a locking cap!

I just wanted to share with everyone the bad fitting chrome gas cap I got installed a couple of weeks ago. This was the second one the dealer tried out. As you can easily see it definitely does not fit correctly.

I will await the newer improved versions and go back to the dealer for a replacment.

My son says this is an install issue

Our is perfect all around. This rubber ring gasket can be lifted out with a plactic trim tool and it will lay flat. There should be an small lip of rubber gasket outside. It looks to tucked in

I have seen about 4 installs of these and all layed perfect like it should.

Do not push the unit on all the way tigh yet, when snug, lift this gasket to it's proper position and the the final pushing of the unit to snap in will make it lay correctly.

I will post photo later

@H3Lady: Any news from your son on that part number?

I'm really sorry to get on everybody's nerves with this topic... but I actually did a lot of research on this and did not come up with a satisfying solution. I don't like gas doors... I kinda think that the exposed fuel cap is a nice feature, which makes a H3 look more like a real offroad vehicle. That's why I really would like to get just the cap. But as I pointed out before, my desire to get just a lockable cap turns out to become a real pain in the rectum. I spent more hours googling for a lockable cap, than I spent on my job the last couple of days.

Thanks H3Lady, I spoke to Dennis this morning and ordered the Chrome Fuel Door and Locking Cap. I have not been able to find them anywhere and Lynch had them for "about a minute" they told me, before they sold out last week.

Did you have this installed at the dealership or did you do it yourself? I don't know how Bachman Hummer will feel about installing something I did not purchase from them (they don't have them or I would have).

Is that the cheap hooker gas cap? Because that sure does blow!

Sorry to hear/see that install. Maybe my dealer was right afterall about the install issue...but I hope it's the adding of the locking gas cap that's causing the delay.

You can do it. I know you can. If we can do it, so can you. JUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION AND READ IT 3-4 TIMES.

HINT: TEMPLATE - MAKE SURE IT IS STRAIGHT CAN'T GO WRONG HERE WITH THE ALIGNMENT. USE LOTS OF TAPE TO HOLD IT. PUNCH THE HOLES WITH AN AWL FIRST THEN SIZE UP THE DRILL BIT LIKE THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY. ---USE THE CORRECT DRILL BIT -IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THAT SIZE GET ONE, THIS IS ONE OF THE PROBLEMS PEOPLE ARE HAVEING, THE LOCKING NUTS MUST POP IN WITH PRESSURE AND NOT MOVE ----THE FENDERS ARE PLASTIC SO EASY TO DRILL.
NEXT WHEN YOU GET READY TO PUSH THE UNIT ON - DO ALL SIDE EVENLY AND SLOW. PUSH TILL THE RUBBER EDGE TRIM SLIGHTLY TOUCHES THE FENDER WITH THE LIP OF THE TRIM FACES OUT. IF THE LIP GOES INSIDE, PULL IT OUT WITH A PLASTIC PUTTY KNIFE. THEN THE FINAL PUSH YOU WILL FEEL IT LOCKING IN PLACE. A ONE TIME DEAL

ONCE YOU SEE THE INTRUCTIONS AND UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE THE ALLEN WRENCH YOU CAN DO IT.

GOOD LUCK...
