How Do You buy a car?
Lets talk about how you haggle with your car dealership to get the best price.
This is whaT Ih ave always done..
Tell them listen.. lets make this easy I will walk out of here with a car right now if you can get where I want to be. Lets start with showing me the invoice on the car... Also how much is the packt at this dealership "Packt is how much the owner makes off each sell" Tell them I know you have to pay your light bill so do I ... I am trying to get a good deal and if you can make $200 in 1 hour I would take it. There is alot of other dealerships around here that will want my business. So go get the invoice please

Re: How Do You buy a car?
I give them a briefcase with enough cash inside to cover the vehicles sticker price plus 30%, take the keys and leave. All this haggling you speak of sounds like a big hassle.

NOT THAT WAY !!!
we're in the age of the internet... look up the cost, know the holdback, learn the current promos...
assuming its not end of the model year, OK...
AND
your in a populated area where there is a lot od choices
offer them FACTORY INVOICE or LESS (sticker or list price is what we call a fairytail or " this is a no **** story" )
The BIGGEST thing to remember is that YOU can always offer a little more $$ for a vehicle but once you mention a price you all of a sudden then can't offer less $$
Remember in Real Estate its LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
IN vehicle purchase its HOMEWORK HOMEWORK HOMEWORK
Thats lesson #1, other lessons to follow...
ps: NEVER NEVER buy dealer options (or add them) until after you have the price settled on the factory portion of the deal

Re: How Do You buy a car?
I am a former desk Mgr. and salesman. Duky is dead on. Homework. Keep in mind if you are trying to buy a unit in demand they will just let you leave. Never mention the Price first. Go on the last day of the month after 5pm if you know what you want. Make sure you are ready to buy at that time. The mood of the dealership is at it's most desperate at the end of the month and one more easy deal will sound good. I can help just pm me and tell me what you looking at. Trade in is another story.

Re: How Do You buy a car?
I did something simular. I found the truck I wanted on Yahoo shopping and it was a new GMC. I found out who had it and where. went and checked it out. it had a sticker of $38,606 back in `01. so I asked the guy if they had any deals on it because it was now `02 he said they would sell it for $33,799. I said I would ask my wife what she thought. I went out and walked around it again and as I did I opened the door and looked at the manufacture date. the truck was 10 months old. I used that to get the deal. I went back in and told the guy I would give him$31,000 out the door. he took it to his sales manager and he came back with $31,800. I said I would go $31,500 but no higher. they settled and I got the truck.
when you take off tax & title it was more like $29,640 if I remember right.

That's too much hassle for me. When I order my truck, it only took me no more than 10 minutes, didn't test drive any of the H3's, didn't check the interior, didn't check any of the features, heck I didn't even know that it has a chrome grill. All I want was a GREEN H3, but they didn't have it at that time, so I had to order it and waited almost two months. So, my H3 is the only H3 I've driven.

Re: How Do You buy a car?
If I trade figure out from GM buypower what my cost is and what I want for my trade.
Go in w/ a wad of cash and throw the keys and money on the salesmanagers desk and tell him which one I want.
I did this to a saleswoman once and thought she was going into shock, didn't know what to do w/ the money or even touch it so she called the manager.
usually drive home w/ the new one in an hour or so.
works more times than not.
We've had 20+ new GM vehicles since the 99 Silverado came out.
being a GM employee does help a lot.

Re: How Do You buy a car?
Research and patience are your best friends when car shopping. And they're your only allies during a high pressure hard-sell.
You have to know the car/truck you want inside and out ... what's standard, what's in each package, what's optional, and (depending on when you buy) what's coming next year. Visit several dealers and test drive the one you like at a couple of them. Shop the competition too, but leave your checkbook at home and don't sit down to deal, you're not ready yet.
Before you ever sit at the table, do all your financial homework . Find out what other dealers are asking and what you can afford. If you're not paying cash, get prequalified on a couple or three loans and pick the best financing. Lendingtree.com is great for this ... one app gets you 3 offers.
Now're you're ready to sit down and deal. Pick the dealership you liked best and go at the end of the month. Don't be the first to name a price unless you lowball ridiculously below the invoice. Don't tell them what you're pre-approved for or you'll end up paying it. Keep the salesguy on topic about the vehicle price as optioned, compared to last year's model and compared to the competition. Bring up every defect or problem with the model that the competition does better. Anything to justify a lower price. Get a list of all dealer surcharges and have them calculate tax on the whole amount.
If you can't get the price in the ballpark or if your BS-o-meter goes off, stand up, thank them for their time and run for your life. In fact, even if you do agree on a price, go for a walk or a drive anyway. Take your time and think about it. Get some dinner and talk it over with the s.o. There's no hurry. There will be other cars an another lot. And if the offer still sounds good with food in your stomach, go back and sign.
Use your own financing. Get everything in writing and read all extended warranty or service plan paperwork to make sure your vehicle options are actually covered.
Or you can get a GMID and avoid all this hassle

Re: How Do You buy a car?
Talk to your wife.
P/s: "Talk" = Beg, plead, cajole, threat (didn't work), supplicate, whine, entreat, implore, coax, flatter, wheedle, offer sex twice a day for a whole month (didn't work either), cry a little, cry a lot, offer sex for a whole year (nope, didn't do it either), wine & dine where it cost > $150 per person (gettin there), get on your knees with a new Chanel bag on one hand and Prada sunglasses on the other (closer), promise her "it'll be just a weekend car, honey..." --> YEHAWWW!! GOT ME MY HUMMER H2 FINALLY!!

Re: How Do You buy a car?
This all sounds good, I think I am going in at the end of this month, with at least GMID from Duramax Tim hopefully, if my friend can't get GMS. It's between 3 '06 Adventure Packages - Black, White or Green, all comparably packaged. Here's the thing, how should I negotiate things on it that I do not want, (i.e. step up bars) Should I try and trade out for things I do want, or just say to take them off. Also, does anyone here have a ballpark value on property tax in SC on a vehicle roughly in the $30k range. I have looked around this weekend and not found much, I just remember paying way too much for my '93 Toyota Pickup.
Thanks
