About as futile as trying to convince people the truths about hybrids. I think Spock said it best, "The needs of the many outweight the needs of the few(27,160) or the one." Unless you can get half a million signatures, that petition will be destined for the waste basket without a glance. Unfortunately, unless it is numbers representing a state majority or has to do with funding influence, it is very difficult for things like this to be taken seriously.

And gawd!, you think that the petitioner could have been a little more expanded in the cause. Like wildfires or access, something more concerning.

The only people concerned about off-roading are off-road enthusiusts. And even then, a trail is of concern- not acreage.

I think wide open and untouched spaces are a luxury in North America that is often taken for granted.

In Eldorado National Forest, we will lose 3300 miles of trails by May 2008. It's done. That's just the beginning.

Between Boxer, the Center for Biological Diversity, and the Sierra Club filing lawsuits county by county, National Forest by National Forest we will be destined to wheel on private land, like the much of the East Coast, Texas and many other states.

There is no harm in at least making an attempt to save it, and to be heard as a "small group".

If we lose, we lose.

Thanks! I sent an e-mail with a link to this thread. They should be aware that some Hummer owners oppose the closures but a majority of us support it. I also informed them that some of the signatures look suspiciously made up. Can AEs sign the petition also? Thanks JT. Good luck though. Sometimes dreams are all we have.

I agree with you, but the people they actually screw are the ones that don't know what's going on. When they close these roads out here, they close it to Everyone. People that hunt and fish and take their kids camping. They close it to Grandpa and Grandma that like to take sunday drives. It's not always about the off road enthusiast. We only make up a small majority of the people that use the roads. The environmentalists don't think anyone in these places has any right to use the roads. They don't care that ranchers use it as a short cut or an easier access to their land. I'm not talking about California, I'm talking about Idaho and Montana and Wyoming. Those populations are silent. Post this stuff on the board in the coffee shop, then you'll get a response.

I agree that the general population is not aware of this. Wilderness areas do allow hunting, fishing biking, hiking etc....it allows everything BUT OHV use. That is why it is focused on OHV users.

The California Wild Heritage Act protects these places by designating public lands owned by the American people as "wilderness" - the highest level of protection in federal law - and segments of California rivers as "wild and scenic." These areas would remain open for recreational activities such as horseback riding, fishing, hunting, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing and canoeing. It would also protect vital watersheds in our national forests, which are a source of California's drinking water supply. In addition, the bill would help protect vulnerable ecosystems and threatened species of plants and animals, such as salmon and trout.
