The budget also imposes a "green levy" on new gas-guzzling passenger vehicles, excluding trucks.

A charge of $1,000 will be levied on Canadians who purchase new vehicles with fuel-efficiency ratings of between 13 and 14 litres per 100 kilometres. The levy will increase by $1,000 for each full litre above the 13-litre benchmark, to a maximum of $4,000.

"It is expected that this measure will increase federal revenues by $110 million in 2007-08 and $105 million in 2008-09," the budget reads.

AND CHECK THIS OUT

Following are a list of the rebates for various vehicles (fuel efficiency rating in brackets):
  • Toyota Prius: $2,000 (4.1)
  • Honda Civic Hybrid: $2,000 (4.5)
  • Toyota Corolla: $1,000 (6.3)
  • Mini Cooper M6: $1,000 (6.5)
  • Ford Escape HEV 4x4: $2,000 (7.4)
  • Saturn Vue Hybrid: $1,000 (7.9)
  • Chevrolet Impala: $1,000 (12.3)

The irony is that the plant in Canada making materials for the Prius battery has destroyed the surrounding environment, from the article: Toyota gets the metal from a Canadian company whose smelting facility at Sudbury has spewed sulphur dioxide into the air for more than a century.

The car giant buys about 1,000 tons a year from the plant, which is owned by Inco, one of the world's largest nickel-mining companies.

Fumes emerging from the factory are so poisonous that they have destroyed vegetation in the surrounding countryside, turning the once-beautiful landscape into the bare, rocky terrain astronauts might expect to find in outer space.

I work for INCO...thats is sooooo not the case anymore, most of the trees were used in the smelting of nickel back in the old days..they used the trees for the smelting beds...for heat

Nice list of crap cars that won't go two feet out of the drive way when winter hits and snow is a half foot deep...not to mention how pathetic they are for highwway travel...stuck in the slow lane forever(Canadians will know who these people are, yeah they are the retards who tie up traffic on the highway doing less than 100km/hr and when the passing lane starts move into the right lane to pass-). This "Think Green" is getting beyond stupid...I believe in conservation but enough is enough already. Remember when the retarded government imposed the luxury tax on vehicles that were considered high priced ticket items? Now they introduce this levy, talk about double taxation. I take all my recycling to the depot and dispose of it there for free, but now the Calgary City council wants everyone to recycle and is trying to pass a $21.00/mth property tax hike so that if you recycle or not, your still paying for the service...sounds like socialist politics to me. All the while I can't help but think that there is a group of some DARWIN ECO Theorist's (Also known as career students - have not worked a day in their lives making an honest wage or running their own business, but have been relying on Government and Private grants/funding to sit around smoke Hash and come up with brain dead ideas on how to screw up the global economy) sitting out there laughing their ass's off knowing how much damage they are doing to the economies of the world.
